About ten years ago, a game called NBA 06: The Life Volume 1 came out, introducing a brand new perspective on sports gaming. The game was centered around creating your own basketball player who starts out as a prospect and eventually builds his way up to NBA stardom. This was quite different than any sports game of its time. Before, most games focused heavily on the multiplayer and online game modes. However, NBA 06: The Life Volume 1 emphasized on the on and off court life of an NBA player. This game was a hit because it allowed basketball fans to create a fantasy NBA life for themselves, which almost turned your fantasy NBA career into reality.
Fast forward ten years, and NBA 2K16 has completely capitalized on this concept. Spike Lee, the producer of 2K16, coined the tagline “Be The Story” for the MyCareer mode and focused on marketing out this particular game mode to the public. Over the past several years, the NBA 2K series has been accredited with creating a career mode like no other video game. This includes creating cutscenes that attempt to shed light on an NBA players off court life. From free agency to social media interactions, 2K has been the front runner when it comes to the career mode in sports games.
In NBA 2K16, the player you create starts in high school. Upon completion of each high school game, he is approached by multiple elite college basketball schools for recruiting. 2K was able to receive licensing agreements from the NCAA and schools such as UCLA, Michigan, Texas, and Arizona for the game. After your high school career is complete, you have to make the decision of which college team you want to play for. After making a decision, your performance in the four college games you play determines where you go in the draft. Without spoiling the whole story, you end up going through an eventful rookie season once you’re drafted, where your player ends up having to make tough decisions to maintain his career and public image.
It’s safe to say that the MyCareer mode is ridiculously entertaining and addicting.
