As high schools around Indiana begin to start their year, colleges are not too far behind. Every summer continues to go by faster and faster as they begin to wind down for college students who only have a few free summers left in their lives. While this summer begins to wind down and the cold will soon set in for students of Indiana schools, they will at least always remember this summer for everything that it had from sports, entertainment and even weather throughout the Hoosier State.
Let’s start this summer with a look at everything in the sporting world, starting in the first weeks of summer, which also happens to be the most popular month in Indiana. May is known for the Indy 500, and this year did not disappoint. In the weeks leading up to the race, several different cars flew through the air ending in spectacular crashes, including from fan favorites Ed Carpenter, Helio Castroneves and James Hinchcliffe, who was knocked out of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” due to his injury during a crash in practice. With this, series and track officials got worried and decided to cut back the speeds on the cars, but it still did not take away from the great racing throughout the 200 laps, which was concluded with Juan Pablo Montoya winning his second career Indianapolis 500.
This summer also saw the Pacers finally split up their team of veterans and bring in young players trying to make a name for themselves. They will play in the same division as the great Lebron James, who carried a team pretty much by himself all the way to the NBA Finals before falling short to Stephen Curry and the sharp-shooting Warriors. While Curry and Golden State may have won the championship, the most popular person from that team would be Curry's daughter, Riley, who melted hearts all over the world with her press conference antics, including her version of Big Sean’s “Blessed.”
Other news in sports that will be memorable from the summer of 2015 is that Tom Brady and the Patriots are cheaters and the Colts will get their shot to take it to them the first game back from Brady’s suspension at home in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Brickyard 400 was boring after five-time winner Jeff Gordon crashed out early, and they are still struggling with crowds and need to do something quick, such as market the drivers better, or the great Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be empty in a few years for the second biggest race on the schedule.
Another thing that will be memorable about this summer is all the rain that this state received. At times, it felt like we were living in Seattle instead of the dry, humid Indiana weather we are used to.
By far the most memorable thing about this summer, though, will be in the entertainment world. First, the long awaited “Jurassic World” finally came out, and it was all you could have asked for and more. The plot was good, the special effects were amazing, and above all, it was scary, which is all you can ask for during those series of movies.
The only thing that was more noteworthy in the entertainment world was obviously Bruce Jenner coming out as Caitlyn Jenner. Either way you look at it, this will always be remembered from summer 2015: from a male gold medal Olympian to a transgender woman and the speech she delivered at the ESPYs after winning the Arthur Ashe Award. Jenner will go down in history for this, giving hope to people wanting to follow in her footsteps.
Overall, this summer has been a memorable one and will be remembered for everything that happened many years from now.
