Valentine’s Day, or as some might like to call it -- single's awareness day, or a ploy by corporate America to enforce consumerism. It seems that, nowadays, the people who embrace Valentine’s Day are in the minority. I am here to tell you that it is totally okay to be happy and in love and enjoy all the cheesiness that is the Feb. 14. Happiness can be so rare and fleeting that if you do find it, you should embrace it and enjoy it. Don’t let other people make you feel ashamed or embarrassed that you get to be in love on what one might consider the most romantic day of the year.
Everyone pays their dues by being single on Valentine’s Day at least a couple times in their life, so when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend to spoil, and be spoiled by, consider it earned. If you want to spend dinner at a nice restaurant staring longingly into each other’s eyes, then go for it. Likewise if you just want to be happy and enjoy the day with the person you love. Do what makes you happy. Today is the one day where it’s acceptable to dot your i’s with hearts, and expect flowers, and talk about how much you love each other until you both want to puke. Deep down even the least romantic people want to do something sweet on Valentine’s Day. And it is totally okay to be obnoxiously in love because it is what you are supposed to do.
I am not saying that if you are single you cannot enjoy the day, as well. Get together with anybody you love! Best girlfriends, family, your cat! And celebrate, but don’t hate. There is no need to bring negativity into a day that is about love! Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love, it can simply be a day to celebrate your love for anyone, even yourself. Treat yourself to dinner or a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, because you love yourself and that is enough.
Why spend the whole day complaining about people “making you sick” or “hating people in love” because it is not going to make the day any better for you. Plan a fun night out for your single friends and be each other’s dates, buy your friends chocolate and flowers or buy them for yourself. Valentine’s Day is kind of like birthdays. Just because it is not your birthday it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. With Valentine’s Day, just because you don’t have a “typical” Valentine doesn’t mean you can’t spend the day treating yourself or your friends with love! While it is easy to be miserable, and hate on all the lovey-dovey couples you’ll likely see that day, it is just going to ruin your day. Besides, when it comes to gifts, who knows what you want better than yourself?
