I live and grew up in Cedar Falls, home to the University of Northern Iowa. A lot of people don't get to say that they grew up in a college town, minus community colleges, so it makes me feel even more special. I do attend UNI, and I almost felt guilty for doing so.
People act as if going to the same college that is in your hometown is bad, because you're "too close to your family" and you'll "never get to TRULY experience college" and "it's an easy way out." That is far, far, far from the truth my friend.
You see, growing up in the same town that you're going to college in is fantastic.
I have been a Panthers fan my whole life, going to UNI football and basketball games and watching the marching band (and eventually being in it!) thanks to living here, so it's basically in my blood. I got a lot of Panther Pride! I also know the community-- I know where the best restaurants are, the best side roads to get you places quicker, where to and to not shop, and best of all, I'm right by home. I know that people worry about being so close to home, but since I live in the dorms I'm really not home as often as you may assume. In fact, I actually get homesick, believe it or not.
Move in was a breeze, and since I live so close it's easy to just go and pick up things I forget or want from home. AND I can see my dog whenever I want. It's awesome.
It also makes me feel proud to say that I grew up in a safe and great town with lots of great people, and the fact that I can continue to live here and pursue my education and make friends from other cities is a really cool feeling.
What people may not know about growing up in the same town you go to college in is that even though you're home, you're also exploring a whole new community and social circles, and it's a completely new experience. You feel freedom even though you're just a short ride away from your mom's home cooking.
People get afraid that they are selling themselves short by not moving away for college, or that they're going to get bored or this and that, but in the end, college is what YOU make of it, not others opinions. Personally, I love going to college right where I grew up. I feel so loved and at home here, but I also feel like I can be myself and have my own freedoms. If you are growing up in a college town and are considering staying, then I would say to do it (given enough reasons), and if you don't like it, then you will know and can move to a college for a better experience! Your experience is all in your hands.
I was born and raised a Panther, and now that I'm living the life as a true Panther, I have so much school pride and pride for my community and the town I grew up in. Go Cats!
