To My Little Sister, From Your Big Sister

Love you, mean it.

I consider being an older sister one of the most important responsibilities I have in life. Being an older sister means you’re her confidant, her shoulder to cry on, and most importantly, her role model. While I’m on my way to figuring out who I am, I want to make sure that I’m able to give her any piece of wisdom I learn along the way so life can be a lot simpler for her.

So little sister…here you go…

First, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I mean it. You’re my “built-in best friend”, you know me better than I know myself, and you’ll be the one standing next to me at my wedding someday. Leaving you was probably the hardest part about going away to college, because I wasn’t sure what I would do without seeing my person every day. With that being said, here are a few things I want you to keep in the back of your mind since I’m not always there to remind you…

Dream big, little one…

No matter how big or small, go after your dreams. If they scare you, be brave and take them on with confidence. You might surprise yourself and end up finding a new passion you never knew you would like.

Don’t stop dreaming…

Maybe you accomplished a dream you had been chasing for a while. If you did, I’m so proud of you. But don’t let that stop you from chasing after more dreams. Occasionally you’ll stumble a few times. If that happens, keep your head held high and never give up.

Be yourself…

Be who you are, not who everyone else wants you to be. If you spend too much time worried about being something you’re not, you won’t end up finding what makes you the happiest. You’re unique and talented in your own spectacular ways. Embrace that, because if you do, you’ll find positive people in your life that see how special those qualities are too.

Be adventurous…

Try. New. Things. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that nothing teaches you more about yourself than jumping outside of your comfort zone. Whether it’s starting small with trying a new type of food, or something on a larger scale like getting over a fear of heights, always make an effort to do something that makes you just the tiniest bit of scared.

Always remember someone loves you and has your back…

You know that saying, “people come and go but family is forever"? Don’t forget that. People come in and out of our lives for so many different reasons. I wish I could tell you why this happens, but one thing I can tell you is that you can always count on your big sister. I love you past the stars, and I’ll be here by your side till the end.

xoxo,

Your big sister

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
