Dear Izzone,
I have been a part of this amazing student section for the last four years and I have seen some outstanding moments, from the game winning shot last Valentine's Day made by Denzel himself to the Michigan game in 2014 featured on College Game Day, and all the big games that have come this year. Our student section is comprised of the best of the best. We have the boys in the polar bear suits, the kid in the flower shirt, and how could we forget the squirrel head that is just as iconic as it is creepy.
We've experienced multiple clock violations, back to back possessions, incredibly played games. We've been ranked the worst student section to play against, although this year we've been kind of weak, and we need to pick it up. As upperclassmen, we need to lead by example so the freshmen to follow will represent the Izzone in the best way possible.
Being in the student section means you are the sixth man on the court. You have to be explosive with every point scored, no matter if we are down by 20 or up by 20; our student section needs to always stand tall. Always remember, Spartan players look to us to get excited and hyped up whenever they need that extra motivation.
I do not think many people realize how lucky we are to sit where we sit. We get to hear almost everything Izzo is saying, or in better terms yelling, we listen to everything that the players scream to each other, and see everything the refs see. We are the only student section that circles around almost the whole entire court. Our team should never lose at home no matter how tough the rival may be.
Maybe this should of been said and done a long time ago when someone popped the white bag on a free throw or when we lost against Iowa on our home court because we were a weak and quiet student section.
At the opening of each home game, we always watch a video of the accomplishments of the program and the highlights that deserved to be replayed daily to every Spartan. This is what should get us pumped up from the get go. From there we need to be jumping up and down screaming so the players can hear us and know we are just as prepared for this game as they are. Be prepared to sing the national anthem and then hold newspapers above our faces as the opposing team's players are announced. Let's show our opponents that they do not belong in our house.
This all leads up to the tip off and then blowing up that white paper bag as we wait patiently for that first bucket just so we can go insane. But that bag is not meant to be popped on a free throw or for the other team, and when that happens it is embarrassing. Throughout the game, you hear us yelling and chanting, counting down the shot clock hoping to get the other team confused and flustered. At the end of the game, when the players go around giving high fives and singing the alma mater, you stay win or lose because you know each player gave it their all in front of their home crowd.
We are a part of every aspect of the game, and when we are quiet, we become useless. So here is me telling every member of the Izzone that, for the rest of the season and here on out, we need to remember why we are here. We need to support our team, win or lose, and take pride in being a part of this legendary student section.
Sincerely,
Another Izzone Member
