A Letter to My Long Distance Best Friend/Freshman Year Roomie
Melody Tamminen

I have always had the pleasure and blessing to have grown up with all my best friends. I never had to say goodbye to a friend and do long distance and I am so grateful for that; that is until I met someone like you once I got to college.

I was so nervous trying to pick a roommate coming into my freshman year. All I know is it felt like online dating and I hated every minute of it. When I first talked to you I thought to myself, “Hmm, she seems cool enough. I’m sure we will get along fine.” Little did I know, you’d become one of my best friends.

I couldn’t wait to spend my senior year summer finding cute decorations for our room, getting matching duvets, and every little other thing that went into our first experience in the dorms. I was so excited to move in and start my new life in this new place we would call home.

Fast forward to move-in day, and I could already tell we were going to be best friends. We were the same person. We had the same sense of humor, basically same personality, and pretty much the same outlook on life.

Some people say you can’t live with your best friend, but they are completely wrong. I could not have lived without you.

I wanted to write this to tell you, thank you. I can’t explain in words how thankful I am that you were by my side through everything this past year. Freshman year of college is always hard and I wanted you to know that I appreciated everything you did for me. Thank you for being my rock through it all.

Thank you for laughing at my jokes, even when they weren’t funny. Thank you for attempting to calm me down when I was being crazy (which was often). Thank you for being there to bask in each others regrets after a crazy weekend. Thank you for buying me food whenever I didn’t have my money or because you didn’t want to be the only one eating French fries.

Thank you for always being down for McDonalds, Jimmy Johns, and Taco Bell. Thank you for trying to get me to workout with you even though I never did. Thank you for always telling me the honest truth about everything. Thank you for listening to me no matter what, especially since we both know how bad I am at telling stories. Thank you for always putting up with my mess since your side of the room was always spotless. Lastly, thank you for all the countless memories I will always remember.

I could thank you for so much but this article would go on forever. I can’t quite put into words how much I am going to miss you this summer not living with you. I will miss waking up in the middle of the night and having half-asleep conversations, and coming home at 1:00 AM to order Dominos. I will especially miss having a friend who loves pasta and pizza just as much as I do, for any meal of the day.

There is not a doubt in my mind about us being friends forever. You’ll be a bridesmaid at my wedding, our kids will be best friends, and you’ll always be my friend who I can let loose with. Thank you again for letting me be myself, making my transition into college so easy, and being the best first roommate a girl could ask for! Can’t wait for all the memories to be made in the years ahead.

I love you beyond words, see you soon!

Love always,

Your Freshman Roomie/BFF

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
