A Letter To My Brother About Dating

To my not-so-little brother,

The world of dating is a mixture of a thousand emotions. From awkwardness to pain, you will experience it all. But when it comes down to it, there is nothing better than being in a relationship. There are things you should know as you date, and I figured there is no better person to tell you about them than the girl who has watched you grow from the little boy who ran around in Bob the Builder Boxers to the man you are now.

Don’t ever change for a girl

This goes both ways, don’t ever change for a girl, and don’t ever expect a girl to change for you. If someone doesn’t love you for who you are, then you’re better off without them. Let her see you at your worst, that way she’ll love you at your best even more.

You don’t have to follow society’s idea of a “relationship”

Relationships don’t have to start in a club, grinding on some random girl that you take home with you. A texting relationship is the easy way out, if you want to really respect a girl, then tell her how much you like her in person. You don’t have to be “talking” to a girl for months before asking her to be your girlfriend and “dates” don’t have to be expensive meals or 3D movies.

Being a virgin is nothing to be ashamed of

I don’t know how it started, but somehow the idea of a guy being a virgin after high school became unacceptable. I know many guys who slept with some random girl just to get rid of their virginity. Being a virgin is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, most girls find it attractive if a guy is waiting for the right one.

Once a cheater, always a cheater

If someone ever has the ability to forget about you for a night as they are getting with someone else, then they don’t love you. There are no excuses, not even being blackout drunk. The same goes for you as well, if you ever stoop so low as to cheat on a girl, don’t ever expect her to take you back, and if she does then you better prove to her that you deserve that forgiveness.

Trust mom’s judgements

It took me forever to realize this, but mom really does know best. She has the power to see the side of someone that you are blind from. If mom tells you that she doesn’t like the girl you are seeing, then take a step back and try and figure out why. Because chances are, if you ignore mom’s judgements and keep dating her, she’ll break your heart.

If her heart has been broken then handle with care

Almost every girl has a story. A story of heartbreak and loss of confidence that took years to build up. Girls like this can be hard to date, but they are the ones who will make the best girlfriends one day, because they know what it’s like to be hurt and they don’t want anyone else to ever feel that way. Just know that it’s going to take a while for her to actually believe you when you compliment her, but once you’ve showed her that she can trust you with her heart, she’ll give you the whole thing.

Remember that she is a girl just like me

This is the most important thing you will ever learn about dating. You always treat a girl like you would expect a guy to treat me. If you wouldn’t want a guy coming up behind me in a club, grabbing me and grinding on me, then don’t be that guy. The respect that I deserve from a guy is the same respect that any other girl deserves from you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
