Centre Women's Lacrosse Series: Lena Jewler

Lena Jewler, sophomore defender and official bad*ss of Centre Women's Lacrosse, sat down with me to answer questions regarding her experiences with CWL.

DB: "First, even though we are teammates, could tell me about yourself? Where are you from and why did you choose Centre?"

LJ: "I grew up in Saratoga, CA and I heard about Centre through being recruited by Coach. She roped me in and got me to visit and, once I got on campus and met the girls on the team, I was absolutely sold. After visiting so many small, D3 liberal arts schools both close to home and on the East Coast, I could tell that Centre was different and I wanted it to be my home."

DB: "What is your year and your major(s) here?"

LJ: "I'm a sophomore, and a tentative Economics & Finance and Psychology double major."

DB: "When did you start playing lacrosse?"

LJ: "I started playing lacrosse my freshman year of high school."

DB: "Why did you choose to continue playing in college?"

LJ: "I didn't think that playing sports in college was going to be my path until I started playing club, where we went to recruiting tournaments and I got the opportunity to play with teammates who aspired to play in college. Playing club really grew my love for the sport and, after playing year-round for the last few years of high school, I knew I couldn't just stop playing because I was graduating."

DB: "Are you happy with your decision to continue playing in college?"

LJ: "Absolutely, it's made my college experience the best that it could possibly be."

DB: "What is your fondest memory involving lacrosse at Centre?"

LJ: "Taking over the warehouse during nighttime festivities as a team with our own outfit theme, requesting all of our own locker room music, just generally being a menace to society."

DB: "Do you have any regrets?"

LJ: "No regrets!"

DB: "What has been the most rewarding part of being a college athlete?"

LJ: "Being able to travel all over an area of the U.S. that I wouldn't have otherwise interacted with and represent Centre throughout the region."

DB: "What are you hopes for the team this year?"

LJ: "I hope that, as a team, we leave it all on the field at every practice and every game and never settle for less than we're capable of achieving."

DB: "What are you hopes for yourself this year?"

LJ: "This year, I hope to grow as a leader and become someone my teammates can count on, on and off the field."

DB: "And, finally, if you could give advice to the players who follow you, what would you say?"

LJ: "Love the game, love your teammates, and love the process."

The Colonels have three home games this week: March 7 against Siena Heights, March 8 against Hanover, and March 12 against SAA rival Sewanee. Come out and support Lena and the other members of CWL on South Turf.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
