17 Things I Learned From Living In A Sorority House

Living with 44 other girls either sounds fun to someone or like a death wish. For me, I spent the first 3 years of college eagerly awaiting my chance to move into my sorority house and live with all of my best friends for my final year of college. It has turned out to be more than I could have ever imagined, harder than I thought but more fun and more incredible than I could have ever imagined.

I graduate in less than 3 weeks and the thought of having to move out of my beautiful brick home that I share with all of my best gals is unbearable. Although it’s not exactly what I imagined it would be like, here are 17 things that I learned from living in my sorority house.

1. You share everything.

If you plan on living in a sorority house during your 4 years of college, I hope your mommy taught you how to share. You will share anything and everything when you live with over 40 other girls. I may not know where 90% of my wardrobe is because everyone’s borrowed all my stuff, but at least I know I can go next door and ask for some laundry detergent or a snack whenever I need it.

2. Privacy does not exist.

You might as well go ahead and erase the words “alone time” from your vocabulary because that is not a thing in a sorority house. Also knocking is apparently an optional thing and any hour of the day or night is an acceptable time to barge into someone else’s room, even at 3 a.m.

3.You learn how to sleep through anything, and I mean ANYTHING.

You could sleep through a bomb going off if necessary because you’ve had to listen to drunk, screaming, crying girls come home at all hours of the night who decide to do cartwheels down the hallway or turn their speakers up to maximum volume in the middle of the night.

4. You always have a source of entertainment.

There’s a lot of pros and cons about living in a sorority house, but a major pro is that if you’re bored you can always find someone to entertain you. If I don’t feel like lying in bed alone and watching Netflix anymore, I can find an endless amount of activities to entertain myself.

5. The kitchen boys become your best friends.

They're the ones with the food. Obviously, I'm gonna befriend them, duh.

6. You know everything about everyone's drama.

There’s always some ish going down in a sorority house. It’s like living in an episode of a reality show 24/7. You'll hear stuff you didn't even go searching for.

7. Everyone has a certain shower that they love.

And you get genuinely mad when you go in there to rinse off and someone is in your shower.

8. The wifi never works.

It usually decides to rebel and completely stop working right when you have a huge assignment to turn in.

9. You can always find someone studying in the basement.

I’ve spent too many late nights writing papers or studying for a test in the basement, but luckily there’s always someone else down there with me to go crazy with.

10. The TV remote is forever missing.

It's fine I'll just sit here alone with my thoughts and stare at the wall.

11. You can always find someone to give you a ride.

Whether it’s a ride to class or to the bar, someone will always have your back.

12. You get to be first in line for meals because you literally live right upstairs.

Dinner is at 5:30? Catch me being first in line at 5:25

13. Things will mysteriously vanish from your room.

It's always my scissors. Always.

14. The house mom becomes your stand in real mom.

And you happily vent all of your problems and frustrations to her.

15. You all begin to speak the same lingo.

All gas no brake, right ladies?

16. The temperature is always whacky.

It's either a million degree or snowing. There is no in between.

17. There is nothing else like it.

It might be a little difficult at times, but you will never have another experience like it. It’s the most fun and special time I’ve had in college and I know I’ll have these incredible memories for the rest of my life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
