New Year, new me. It's a motto that everyone either embraces or steers clear of because there is no avoiding it. Resolutions made will be broken, though not every resolution will break, and that doesn't mean yours has to either. The chance of your resolution making or breaking under the pressure of a new year is dependent on several factors. Firstly, how high is your goal? And yes, the moon is too high, there are no stars between to land among if you miss, only empty space, unsuitable for life. Can it actually be done? Make it easier without cutting corners, instead of "lose x amount of pounds" make your goal to pick up healthier habits, eat better, exercise more often, etc. Next is the time it would take for you to complete the goal. Is it a long-term project or a step-by-step process?
Make goals with the intent of keeping them, they're there for you, catered to you by you. Although it's tempting to upheave your entire life, start anew, remember that you are pretty much also the same person as you were yesterday. Much like a birthday, turning a new year doesn't mean a completely new slate. You'll still have that compulsion to bite your nails through the first bit of 2016 as you did in 2015. It's through resolutions and keeping healthy habits that people see real change, like the sudden realization that your nails are long and bite-free.
Ultimately, my advice is to take your time, take things one step at a time, and give yourself realistic, healthy goals to a better future. Don't just think of things in a far off time, where you're smarter, fitter. Do you see yourself walking to the gym even when there's a snowstorm in February? Can you really write a book in May when finals are overwhelming you? Sometimes, short-term considerations are just as important if not more. Make strong resolutions, make resolutions that will stick, make them with the intent of being a better version of yourself, instead of trying to inherently change who you are. It won't stick, don't waste your time.
You can do it, you have the ability to improve yourself, to fix bad habits, to bring out the best from within. It starts going day by day. Cross off dates in a calendar, create a method of reminding yourself, and stay motivated! Get your friends or family to help you achieve your goals. Make sure they're plausible and that they're something you really want to do! You'll be able to get through the days beyond that New Year hype and even into the start of 2017. You are so capable.
