Keeping up with the Greeks: Lauren Risher

Alpha Phi's own Lauren Risher has set herself apart from the rest of Greek Life by dedicating herself to a rigorous diet and workout plan solely for one of her passions - bodybuilding! Besides having a killer body and an extremely healthy lifestyle, Lauren's love for bodybuilding made her qualified for a position as Penn State's Bodybuilding.com campus ambassador!

Keep up with Lauren as she shares the ins and outs of what it's like to be a campus ambassador at Penn State, and offers her advice on how to get involved with bodybuilding!

1. How are you spending your school year?

This year I am a Bodybuilding.com campus ambassador for Penn State! I was a figure skater for 13 years, but stopped when I came to college. I wanted to have something to keep me motivated when I was going to the gym. My boyfriend's cousin was a figure competitor, and I went to one of her shows and fell in love with the bikini division. Then I joined Team Center Stage Figures and they helped me get a nutritionist and an online trainer. Then, I dieted and trained all through the second semester for my competition. I competed in June and fell in love with the sport, and now I am going to be competing again next summer!

2. How did you acquire this position?

My sorority’s president, Gabby Ross, sent out an email asking girls in our sorority to apply for the position, and after filling out a questionnaire and making a video displaying why I thought I was a good fit for the position, I got the job!

3. Is this position any different than you imagined it would be going into it?

It is pretty much what I had expected the position to be. Basically, my job is to post to social media and host events, courtesy of Bodybuilding.com! I started a new Instagram @lmariefit_psu and Facebook page called Lmariefit at Penn State to promote a healthy lifestyle in college and the Bodybuilding.com brand.

4. What has been your most memorable experience so far?

I just began this job, so I have only done a couple of posts. But something I am really looking forward to is a Bench-A-Thon, which will be a benching competition between fraternities that I will be putting on this semester!

5. What would be your advice to anyone who aspires to obtain a position similar to this?

If you’re interested in this position for next year, I would suggest contacting Bodybuilding.com or Gazoozle, who helped connect me with Bodybuilding.com. Also, make sure you’re living a healthy lifestyle, so that you’re the type of candidate that Bodybuilding.com would want to promote their brand.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
