This year I joined my first sport ever, since I was 7 and danced at the rec center. I only ever remember the dancing, not everything that happened in between. This year I will definitely remember everything in between. It’s sad to think that I might never have experienced what it’s like to be on a true team and all the benefits that come with it. I have no regrets from joining the cross country team and in fact am now wondering what I’m going to do with my life now that the season is over. In case you have any doubts about joining a sport, here are a few of the reasons why it truly pays off.
1. Social life/ new friends
When you join a sport, no matter what skill level you are, everyone is a team which means you just made 50 new friends (depending on the team size). Team dinners are always super fun with a lot of bonding. It gives you an excuse to get out and do something.
2. A healthy diet
Although not everyone takes the diet plan seriously, it does give you an outline of how to exercise regularly and live a healthy lifestyle. I definitely tried the diet plan at first, but it was really hard for me to catch on. However, I did subconsciously start eating healthier. It was actually really comforting to realize I didn’t crave soda or too many sweets. Besides, I don’t want to be gaining the freshman 15 when I go to college. It’s also really nice to know that you are burning a whole bunch of calories at practice and games so you can technically eat super unhealthy for a day and not feel too bad about it. Practice also gives you an outline of how to exercise.
3. Time management
With school for eight hours, then practice for another two, plus dinner and chores, that leaves about one hour, maybe two to do homework. That little amount of time creates either better procrastination skills, or better time management skills. Hopefully, you choose the latter. You have to learn how to prioritize your classes and make good use of your off-hours. The lack of time may just turn you into a responsible young adult.
4. Family
As I said above, by joining a sport, you have just made 50 new friends. Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, you will find someone to hang out with. These are the people you spend more time with than your family while your sport is in season. They are there with you through every struggle complain just as much as you do. You hate the sport, yet you love it. Everyone is super supportive and excited when you do well, equally upset when you do bad. They are there for the loud and obnoxious cheers and crazy stories from every game. In school you stick together like a small gang. Nothing beats being a part of something bigger than you. It’s a bittersweet feeling when it ends.
If you have any interest in joining a sport, do it. You won’t regret it.
