Jefferson, NJ. A town in Morris County. Lake Hopatcong and Oak Ridge combined together. But most importantly, my home. Jefferson is not racist, and in fact, it is the complete opposite.
On January 27, the Jefferson High School boys basketball team faced off against Dover High School. After that night of the game, Jefferson was deemed racist and a "trashy" town. Jefferson students dressed in America theme attire and shouted comments out like "ashy knees" and "build a wall". Although nothing was done to stop those comments, this incident ended up on NJ.com and NBC4NY and was taken way too far. Believe me, when I say this, Jefferson is not a racist town. Jefferson is my home and I am extremely proud of that.
Jefferson's theme that night was America. The students dressed in red white and blue and Trump shirts. The Dover parents took offense to this because Jefferson knew they were a Hispanic and African American-based population. But why does that matter? First of all, Jefferson had planned this theme 2 weeks in advance when they first planned to play Mountain Lakes. Second, it is America. This is Dover's country too. Trump is your president too so the students wearing that should not have offended you. I do not agree with the comments said. They were wrong. But they were not said by the entire student section. If you watch the video they were said by a few students. To the Dover parents who were targeting the students: shame on you. Saying their parents are failures is so low of you. You are supposed to be the adult. It is ignorant and is not fair to blame the parents.
Please. I beg you. Do not let these few students ruin the reputation of Jefferson. Jefferson is the greatest home I could have asked for. It is filled with amazing people, incredible staff, and is really an amazing community. I would not be where I am without Jefferson. Do not think of Jefferson as a racist town because it is not. Those few students might be but the town is not. Jefferson is a town that bleeds blue and gold and the students are the best asset to that.
