Ithaca's Odyssey: Meet Our Writer, Madison Bess

All of our writers tap into their personality to bring you new articles each week, but here is a little bit about us that we haven't shared yet.

This is our first in a series of profiles about our amazing writers at the Odyssey at IC!

Ashley Brilla: Why did you choose IC?

Madison Bess: I choose Ithaca because of the phenomenal journalism program and also because it's a really beautiful campus.

AB: Why did you want to write for the Odyssey?

MB: I choose to write for the Odyssey because I like being able to choose what I write about. I also write for the Ithacan which is a bit different because you are told what to write about, but the Odyssey gives a new perspective.

AB: Why Journalism?

MB: I've always liked to write. Reading and writing are my favorite subjects. Plus, journalists have a really big impact on society.

AB: Favorite article you've ever written?

MB: My favorite article I've ever writer was about the misconceptions of rowing and explaining what the sport is.

AB: What are you involved in on campus?

AB: What is your dream job?

MB: I have a minor in sports media, and my goal is to be a broadcast journalist for a big news outlet. I'm also interested in sports broadcast journalism with a focus on either gymnastics or crew.

AB: Who is your dream interview?

AB: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

MB: I am mostly German, and it's really a pretty country.

AB: What is your favorite thing to do in Ithaca?

MB: Going to the lake everyday. I also love the gorges, but you only go to those every so often. The view on the lake just never gets old.

AB: Where is your favorite place to eat in Ithaca?

AB: What is your favorite movie?

MB: It's "Stick It," and I say that because I did gymnastics. I mean, it's just hilarious! It never gets old.

AB: What is your favorite TV show?

MB: I have so many favorite shows, but I'm going to go with one that's in season and say "American Horror Story."

AB: Who is your actress BFF?

MB: I feel like Emma Roberts and I would just get along really well.

AB: Who is your actor boyfriend?

MB: Josh Hutcherson. I would say Zac Efron, but I feel everyone says that so I want to be a little different.

AB: Who would play you in a movie?

MB: Chloe Grace Moretz. People have told me I look like her, and I actually met her once.

AB: Are you a night owl or an early bird?

MB: I can really be both. Crew has made me an earlier bird sometimes I go to bed before 9:30 p.m., and it concerns me. Waking up for practice at 4:30 a.m. helps make me an earlier bird, but I can really be both. I'm a bird and an owl.

AB: Coffee or Tea?

AB: Dog or Cat?

AB: What is your cause?

MB: I like to make sure that everyone is accepted and included. Growing up I was always taught to be nice to everyone.

AB: What is your life motto?

MB: There's a quote, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." I feel like that really applies to life because everyone needs to work hard to succeed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
