To My Immigrant Father Who Voted for Trump,

Donald Trump isn't going to help you.

To My Immigrant Father Who Voted for Trump,
Huffington Post

My father is a Syrian immigrant. In Syria, he worked with his uncle making bread in a bakery. That was his job since he was 9 years old. He went to New York in November '86 when he was a little older than I am, leaving his pregnant wife in Syria with two children under the age of 2. He came to America to make a better life for him and his new family. At the time, Ronald Regan was president. According to my father and grandparents, he came from the working class so he was there to help the working class. My grandmother, to this day, still talks greatly about him. My father had a few friends in California starting a business, truth be told, the business sucked and the idea was kill in January '87. My father bought the crappiest car a New York car dealer had to offer and began his 2,791 mile trip from New York City, New York to Los Angeles, California. Halfway through his trip, in Berwyn, Illinois (I am honestly surprised his car made is that far), he landed in front of my late grandfather's convenience store. Long story short, he started working for my grandfather, brought his wife and 3 children to America. He lived in the apartment above my grandfather's shop. A one bedroom, one bathroom apartment with chipping paint and creaking floors. My father and his wife slept on a futon in the living room, giving up the small bedroom with a full-size mattress on the floor for their 3 young children. The windows barely opened and the walls were like poster boards. In '92, my father met my mother. Again, leaving his pregnant wife, he decided my mother was the one for him. She was younger, prettier and fresh out of high school. Later that year, they got married. His first wife left her 4 young children with my father and his new wife. My mother began to raise them as her own. Soon afterward, she had me, my two younger sisters and two younger brothers.

Here we are, in 2016, and my immigrant father voted for Donald Trump. He left his homeland to make a living and give himself a name other than "the son of so and so, the baker". Yet here he is, defending Donald Trump and his actions. Saying how much he is going to help us. I am a queer, woman of color. Donald Trump is not trying to help me. You are an immigrant. Donald Trump is not trying to help you either.

To my father, if somehow you stumble upon this article, this one goes out to you. Donald Trump is disgusting. The man you voted for is a pig. He is a racist white man with a "small loan" of a million dollars. He is a rapist. A sex offender. You are putting a man in charge who looks at women, like your 5 daughters and objectifies them. The same man who said he would date his daughter, if she wasn't his daughter. Is that really the man you want running your country?

You are putting the future of the country I am going to continue to live in and start my family in under a rapists' power. There is a girl out there, scared out of her mind because her rapist is leading in the polls right now. You and every disgusting republican who voted for Trump is letting rape culture win. You are practically selling your daughters bodies for objectification. You voted for a man that is pro-life. You voted for a man who thinks it's not only okay to objectify women, but also to rape them. It's not just about getting an abortion, it's the fact that he, a man, thinks he even has the right to say what any woman does with her body. He believes that women are just essentially aesthetically pleasing objects.

You voted for a man that said this:

Sexual assault in the military should be expected, according to Trump, because what else would happen when you put men and woman together?

You, an immigrant, voted for a man who is openly against immigrants. He said that they are bringing drugs, crime and that they are rapists. Oh, Mr. Trump, weren't the charges for your rape trial just dropped because the victim was receiving death threats? Yet, you have the audacity to say that immigrants are the rapists.

You are supporting a man who's vice president, Mike Pence, is avidly anti-LGBT. The LGBT community just got the right to marry as they please a little over a year ago, and it is soon going to be taken away from them. Just a reminder, Mike Pence signed a bill in 2013 that would put gay couples in jail for only applying for a marriage license, not even getting married. He voted for 4 of your children to be in jail for applying to marry someone that loves and accepts them.

Dad, your first granddaughter is smartest and most beautiful 8-year-old I know. She is top of her 3rd-grade class and always wins at monopoly. She is also autistic. The man you voted for makes fun of the disabled.

You voted for a man that believes that global warming is just an expensive hoax, invented by the Chinese.

You voted for a man that is a misogynist (noun; a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women).

Now that Trump was elected, I am scared. I am scared for myself, my family, and my community. I just came to terms with my sexuality, with the fact that I am different than people around me. Soon that is all going to be taken away from me. Trump is not going to help me; he is against me. To him, I am only a "beautiful piece of ass".

Not only my life but your entire family's lives are in danger. I hope you are happy with your decision.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
