Let’s face it, sports aren’t for everyone. Not every person enjoys watching games or being in a loud stadium, however, sports connect people throughout the world and are unavoidable for most people. Whether it’s the homecoming football game that everyone in school is going to or the Red Sox game your friend bought last minute tickets to, you’re going to have to sit through a game or two at some point.
I’ve personally never been much of an athlete. I flinch when a ball is even thrown in my direction. However, my friends and family members are all athletes, so I’ve surrounded by sports my whole life. I’ve sat through countless softball tournaments, tennis matches, track meets, and hockey games.
Just because sports aren’t “my thing” doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching their games, because I do (It just took a little bit of extra work.)
So, this list may sound a little (or very) silly, but here are my tricks on how to enjoy a game of softball, tennis, or any other sport if you aren't fond of athletic things.
1. Bring a friend
It can be pretty boring to go anywhere alone, especially to an event you’d rather not attend. Bringing a friend gives you company instantly. It’s great to have someone to talk to and enjoy game with. You can ask them questions, take a few selfies, etc.
2. Learn the basic rules of the game
It’s not necessary to learn everything about the sport, but know enough so you’re not lost throughout the entire thing. You can actually follow the game. You will also cheer at appropriate times and understand the crowd’s reactions. It’s not fun to be puzzled the whole time.
3. Cheer for one team or player
It sounds stupid, I know, but a lot of times you just don’t care who wins. You may not have a favorite team or you may not know any of the players, but you still should root for someone. Cheer for the team of the side you’re sitting on or the one your friend is wearing all the merchandise from. Cheering is part of the experience. Don’t be the stick in the mud that won’t even let out a “woo” or clap when their team scores!
4. Walk around the stadium
Whether you’re in a stadium, field, or ice rink, take a walk around the place. Not only will your body stretch out from sitting all that time, but the place itself can be cool. Also, people watching for a few minutes is entertaining.
5. Buy food
On your walk around the facility, grab a bite to eat. Food is great, we all know that. Eating some fries or a burger will help you avoid feeling “hangry”… and no one wants to be around that.
