“First they ignore you; then, they laugh at you; then, they fight you; then, you win.” I always thought this quote applied to Bernie Sanders more than anyone else running for President in 2016, I even gave him my official endorsement as a Democrat. The Vermont senator is beating former Secretary of State, Senator and First Lady Hillary Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, so I guess America’s “feeling the Bern,” so to speak. But there’s one other guy; a problem that I never in a million years would imagine we’d be facing: Donald Trump, the guy made from cotton candy, foreskin and orangutan hair, might actually win the Republican nomination.
I know that, a few months ago, I wrote that the momentum for the Trump campaign wasn’t made to last, and I hope that’s still true. It might be the greatest PR campaign in American politics history, now that I think about it. Trump is polling at 32 per cent in the Republican field, higher than his two closest competitors, Dr. Ben Carson and Gov. Jeb Bush, combined. COMBINED! He is also beating Clinton and Sanders head-to-head, as well as possible contenders Vice President Joe Biden and Former Vice President Al Gore. His xenophobia, racism and overall selfishness have resonated with moderate and hardcore conservatives alike, men and women. This is not a drill; we have a serious crisis on our hands, and we need to stop him. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself an expert, but I’d like to throw in my two cents on how to end the phenomenon that is Trump.
First, let’s analyze what’s making the Donald so popular. He is obviously not a stranger to controversy; as was seen with his John McCain comments, his catfights with Megyn Kelly, Carly Fiorina, and Jorge Ramos, him saying that he wished he could have sex with his daughter, as well as him calling Mexican immigrants “rapists.” He has brushed these otherwise career-ending scandals with ease, with the help of numerous television appearances, aggressive tweets and, most importantly, the support of Fox News. The number one news network in the world for people who sat on the remote and are too old to know how to change the channel anymore has continually supported Trump’s ideas, such as building a giant wall on the border with Mexico. Even liberal shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Real Time with Bill Maher and The Young Turks have covered his campaign because, let’s face it, it’s a comedy gold mine. But, we have to face the hard truth; the more coverage he gets, the harder he’ll be to stop. So, step one goes out to liberal media personalities: try not to cover his campaign anymore, don’t feed the beast. I’ll be doing the same after this article. I know it’s tempting, but if we don’t take this seriously, we’ll regret it later.
Now, Bernie Sanders has been drawing crowds in the thousands for a long time. The only problem is that the mainstream media refuses to take him seriously. So let’s focus on Hillary for a moment. Much like Trump, she’s been engulfed in controversy. Since her decision to use a personal email account while Secretary of State, the issue of whether or not she can be trusted has been raised. Almost half of America thinks she can’t so, naturally, they’d flock over to Trump. Hillary needs to show her supporters why they should trust her, dropping the PR gimmicks she’s been using. Basically, no dodging hard questions; no invading Iran; no changing your accent depending on what state she’s in; no making fun of Republicans; no quoting the Beatles and getting the lyrics wrong. Instead of going on Ellen and doing the Nae-Nae, she should go on CNN to speak with Christiane Amampour, or on MSNBC to speak with Rachel Maddow. If she’s feeling confident she can even have an exchange with the idiots on Fox News. Take a lesson from Bernie and don’t be ambiguous, just be honest and tell people what your policies are. Shouldn’t be too hard.
And now, I’d like to deliver a personal message to the Republican candidates, specifically to Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina:
“Dear Monsters,
Currently, Donald Trump has been destroying you guys in the polls, and that's not a hyperbole. I know you all share some ideologies with him (Mr. Cruz, maybe you changed your mind on birthright citizenship like you have with every other issue), but you all have to get together to stop him. Mr. Paul and Ms. Fiorina, as promising up-and-comers in the polls, can do more television appearances to gain a larger base with Republicans. Be direct, smile to the camera and focus on your issues rather than insulting Hillary and Obama or, as you guys call them, Hitler and the Antichrist (not necessarily in that order). Mr. Bush, show America why you’re the smartest in your family, and how you’d differ from the walking punch line that was your brother’s presidency. And, finally, Mr. Cruz, I’m tired of your hypocrisy. If you want voters to pay attention to you and not Trump, pick a side and stay on it. If you hate Obamacare, then don’t use it yourself; if you’re against birthright citizenship, say so and don’t back down. If you guys work together, we can end this thing. Good luck.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Democrat”
And now that that’s out of the way, there’s one final step to end the Trump-mentum. No matter how loud he screams, or what he says, we as voters need to stop sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. If you want to share ideas and news stories from stupid media whores that talk out of their asses, don’t worry, there are plenty of Vine and YouTube stars out there. Just don’t feed the beast, he lives off of attention. So, I’d just like to say this will be the last time I write about the Donald, I won’t be part of the problem. Next week, I’ll write about literally anything else. Adieu, Trump, I won’t miss you!
