How To Avoid The Winter Break Blues

How many times a year can college students do absolutely nothing and not be given crap for it? Once a year – winter break. We just got back from school and slaved for a week (maybe more) on finals. And you know what, we deserve this month off. But after about 2 days of being home – and maybe this is just me – you get bored! So here is a Winter Bucket List of all the things you can do over break to avoid the winter break blues.

Binge an entire season of whatever show you want on Netflix.

That may be the longest bucket list item to date but why not? You have unlimited time (for about 30 days) so why not binge that show you have been avoiding during the school year? You have time; you have no places to be and no responsibilities. You can spend copious amounts of time on whichever series you want – yes that means you will probably finish all 9 seasons of The Office in about a week but hey that’s what Winter Break is for.

Go into the nearest city.

For me this is an hour-long train ride into New York, for other’s it could a 2 hour road trip to St. Louis. Whichever city is nearest you make the effort to get in there. Nothing is prettier than cities right before and even after Christmas. The stockings are all hung, the lights are up, there’s probably some sort of Christmas tree somewhere. So why not live it up for a day with your friends in a city? Get glammed up and go to shops you could never afford anything in and then go and spend the little money you have left over from the semester on food.

Christmas Movie Marathon.

Very different from and not to be confused with binging a TV series, a Christmas movie marathon is a required winter break activity – but is only acceptable before December 25. Make sure you get all the stupid Christmas movies, the classics and the not so Christmas movies that somehow still are considered movies and watch them all. Be a basic white girl and drink hot coca, in leggings and a giant sweatshirt while cuddling with your dog and watching hours upon hours of Christmas movies.

Hang out with your friends from home.

Just like you only have a limited amount of time with your family a year, you only have limited amount of time with your home friends per year. Make sure you make some time for the people that saw you through your high school stages, your gawky phases and all that were in between. You wouldn’t be you without them so make sure during this time of thanks you thank them.

Family time.

Again maybe this is just me but I actually enjoy spending time with my family when I am home. Maybe it’s because my little brothers haven’t bothered me for 3 months or maybe it’s because I actually realized while away at school my family isn’t as crazy as I thought. Spend time with the people that mean the most to you. Maybe it isn’t someone who is related to you by blood but someone that you consider family. Make time for the people that mean the most to you.

You are home for 30 days. It’s the longest and shortest 30 days of the year. You’ll be home for a week and be itching to go back and be at school but just remember that you wanted to come home for 3 months and know you are here. So make the most it. Go to your favorite bagel place (looking at you Jersey friends), go into the nearest city, spend time with your family, and most importantly enjoy the quite time because when you come back to school good luck finding a second to yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
