Choosing Happiness

Happiness—to most people—is achieved through contentedness with the life surrounding them. People may say and truly believe they are happy, but in reality they still struggle with negative thoughts or feelings on a day-to-day basis. As human beings, we tend to focus more on harmful memories, rather than those that are positive. If this is true, if humans do have the propensity to endure constant negative thoughts, what evidence is there that proves people trick their minds into thinking they are satisfied with life?

Happiness is a short-lived and fleeting human condition, one that affects people every day of their lives. Human nature indicates an innate need to experience wholeness; however, as a society, we tend to focus on the negative commodities rather than the positive. People never reflect nor remember the magnanimous acts they perform, but they can recall every little detail of something they did wrong. Another reason for the fallacy of happiness comes from the inherent ability for people to hold themselves to a higher standard than others around them. We remember failures more vividly than successes and never let ourselves experience satisfaction. There’s always something we did wrong, but there’s never something we did right. But if we continue to dwell on all the things we do wrong, or never fully succeed in, who is to say we would ever experience happiness at all?

The most challenging question for people in general is, what comes next? After discovering true happiness can never be accepted by our minds, how does someone continue to live? The answer is simple. Happiness is short-lived, but also worth every minute of pure joy you receive. Though mankind may dwell on the sub-sequential ideas in life rather than the positive ones, the feeling of negativity will never quite match that of being positive. Don't be fooled by emptiness, or lack of feeling complete, because one day you'll realize you spent your entire life searching for something that was never truly there in the first place. Life is what you make of it, and in the end, negativity will never go away unless people allow positivity to step in. People are the masters of their own fate, along with their own happiness.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
