April is known for a few things, such as rain showers (or late snow storms in New England), spring, and Autism awareness. Autism is becoming a more commonly spoken about disorder in American society. In 2014 data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it was discovered that 1 in 68 children in the United States are on the autism spectrum, according to Autism Speaks. This does not mean that 1 in every 68 children are going to be on the middle or high extreme side of the spectrum, rather it covers the whole spectrum.
There are differences in everyone, such as their behaviors and characteristics, depending on the location of somebody on the spectrum. On the other hand, there are a few common characteristics listed by the National Institute of Mental Health such as, "ongoing social problems that include difficulty communicating and interacting with others" and "repetitive behaviors as well as limited interests or activities." In other words, those on the Autism spectrum often have more difficulty interacting with others and have limited interests. However, it is important to realize that this does not apply to everyone with Autism.
These characteristics can be found across the spectrum of Autism. Autism Speaks defines it as "an Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) considered to be on the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. They appear to be just like those who are not on the Autism Spectrum, yet in some cases perhaps more advanced.
I have been with my boyfriend for over three years. After one month of dating, I found out that he was on the spectrum. I never would have guessed because I didn't even notice. Even to this day I don't notice it. But there's something about knowing that makes him love him more. Not that he has difficulties that some people don't, but because it makes him who he is. He's genuine, caring, loving, funny, smart and does not let anyone get him down.
People on the Autism spectrum are just like those without any disabilities. They have feelings, interests, and secrets. Not everyone is born perfect, but those with Autism always deserve chances. My boyfriend is one of the smartest guys I know. He always puts a smile on my face. When I see him, I don't see someone who is on the Autism spectrum; I see the man I love.
April is Autism Awareness Month, a time where we can celebrate how incredible and awesome people on the Autism Spectrum are. It's nothing new that there are so many people in the United States with the disorder, but if we treat them like we treat everyone else, we may just make a few friends.
