Although we haven't won any medals yet in the 2016 Olympics, we are still proud of our athletes who have participated thus far and have represented our country well. As Jamaicans we shout "likkle but wi tallawah" meaning, although we are a small nation, we are strong, fearless and we are determined as a people. I am proud to be Jamaican.
My friend Oneaka Black and I, who is also a fellow Jamaican, watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics in the lobby of our dorm building in which we waited for hours to see the Jamaican athletes walk out with the flag. When we were finally blessed with their presence, we jumped and screamed and it was very emotional for both of us because earlier we were talking of how exciting things must be back home as everyone is preparing for the different events. Being international students, we do not get the opportunity to go home as often as we would like. However, seeing Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce walking with the flag gave us chills, because we know that the Olympics have always been an event that not only brings Jamaicans closer together but it shows us that with hard work and determination we can achieve great things and there is nothing that we cannot do.
What the colors of the Jamaican flag represents:
Green:Hope and Lush Vegetation
Gold: Natural Wealth and Sunshine
Black: Hardship, Strength and Creativity of the People
Seeing the Jamaican Flag or just the three colors together, reminds me of the strength and potential that each Jamaican holds, whether they know of this or not. That is why knowing the stories of some of our athletes, is so important for many Jamaicans because it shows us that no matter what situation you were born into or even the difficulties that you face in life, keep focused on your dreams and put the efforts in to make your dream a reality.
For being such a small nation it gives us great pride to know that we are the home for some of the fastest athletes in the world, and for the athletes whose sports may not receive the praise that it deserves, we commend you for being brand ambassadors.
So, whether we walk away from the Olympics with or without any gold medals, we will still be proud of our athletes and we will welcome them home with open arms.
Now that you have read the article, go back and watch the video that is posted at the top and then hopefully now you will get a better understanding of why Jamaicans who are home or abroad will shout, wear their colors and feel proud when it comes to Olympics.
I see Olympics as more than just sporting events, but events that brings nations together and dreams to life.
