Ever looked at a picture of yourself from the past and you think it looks good, until you realize your outfit is a complete mess? We've all been there. It's hard to look at, but we have to face it eventually. Fashion has definitely drastically changed throughout the years, some for the better and some for the worse. In this article I'm going to talk about come fashion fails from the early 2000s.
1.) Aeropostale
Aeropostale was every teenagers go-to store. It was in basically every mall across America and wasn't too expensive, so it was easy for people to get to and buy clothes from. Everybody in school wore Aeropostale, so if you didn't people would judge you.
2.) Crimped Hair and Bump Its
Your hair is usually one of the first things that people notice about a person. How it's styled or what color it is is something that people are always looking at. Bump-its were a huge fashion statement in 2009. This was a knock off of the "bump" hairstyle that was very common in the 1960s that everybody seemed to wear. We just couldn't let it go and leave it in the past, we had to bring it back. A Bump-It was a piece of plastic that ladies would put in their hair to give it a poofed-up look to make it look like it has more volume in it. Crimped hair was another popular hairstyle that people would wear. It's basically waves in your hair, but they're not curled. They're straight waves on flat hair. To get this look, you could either use a hair straightener or a crimper (another type of styling wand). This hair style went out style fast, so it's not common anymore and some people don't even know what it is. No worries though, luckily this one made its grand appearance then hit the road.
3.) Bobby Jack Brand Anything
Every girl at one point in her life had to have owned a shirt with the Bobby Jack monkey on it. They were my absolute favorite. I had probably ten different shirts in all different colors. I had one for every day of the week and my favorite one, which I always wore on Fridays, was a long-sleeved and short-sleeved shirt combined and it was light purple. That aside, Bobby Jack was a huge brand that all young girls would wear in the 2000s and thinking that they looked good, wrong.
4.) Popcorn Shirts
These were quite possibly the weirdest shirts ever. You could buy them at the local pharmacy or Walmart for $5 and they always seemed to fit into every outfit you could possibly create. You would pick them up and they would fit in the palm of you hand and hey would stretch out. These shirts were basically all one size fits all. They were a huge fashion trend and everybody loved wearing them because they very comfortable and cheap to buy.
5.) Heelys
These were some of the greatest shoes to have ever been invented in my opinion. They were reversible between normal tennis shoes and a simple mode of transportation. They were great because if you didn't feel like walking, you could just attach the wheels and ride em' cowboy. Heelys started getting really dangerous because people would not pay attention to where they were going and it would put people's safety in danger, so a lot of businesses and school banned them and wouldn't allow anybody inside with the wheels attached. Funny story, a kid in my graduating class in high school wore Heelys during graduation and he rode them across stage to receive his diploma and down the ramp. Yeah let's just say the administration wasn't very happy about that, but they couldn't exactly do anything about it.
6.) Gauchos
These were really comfy pants that were very common in girls, but they had some for guys too. They were almost all high-waisted capri leggings that flared out at the bottom. They came in a variety of colors and were perfect for all occasions. You could wear them when you were feeling lazy or going to sleep, going to school, work, and (with the right top) a wedding or funeral. They were the best pants.
7.) Studded Belts
These were considered the cool belts to wear. Most of the "popular kids" at my school wore them so of course that made everybody else want to have one. You could pick those up at your local Target or Walmart for cheap. They were about $5-$10 and didn't last for a very long time because the studs would fall off so easily. If you're like me though, I would just pick the studs off so I would have a solid colored belt. These belts would come in a variety of colors and the studs were usually either black or neon colors, there was almost never an in between.
8.) Rubber Bracelets, Slap Bracelets, and Silly Bands
If you didn't rock a yellow "Livestrong" bracelet or a thick, multicolored "I Love Boobies" bracelet, what were you actually doing with your life? Pretty much everybody I ever met had at least one, if not both, of these bracelets. Those were the most common, but of course there were more for several different organizations or causes. Slap Bracelets were always a nice accessory to any outfit. They always kind of painful to put on because, like the name says, you have to slap it against your skin so it can snap into shape and fit. Silly Bands were the best. If you didn't have at least fifty, you weren't living to the fullest. A group of people would sit at the lunch table together or somewhere on the playground and we would have Silly Band exchanges. We would trade them to get ones we wanted and potentially stack up on your collection. Silly bands came in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. They were the perfect thing to collect and were easy to match clothes with since you usually had every color to match with.
9.) Platform Flip Flops
Last but not least, platform flip flops. They were more comfortable than high heels and matched almost everything. They were a perfect addition to any outfit, and they gave you a few extra inches in height. Perfect for all the short girls in the world.
We've all been there and we all regret our fashion decisions. Let's hope we've all grown out of these horrible fashion mishaps and have moved on to bigger and better things, and hopefully a better wardrobes.
