Professional football in the US has been around since the early 1900's, but the Super Bowl didn't come into play until 1966. In the early era of professional football, the NFL determined the season champion through the end of season standings. It wasn't until 1933 that we saw the introduction of the playoff system. Not all teams from this era are still in existence, but as a Packers fan I must mention the fact that the Packers won the most Championships in Professional football before the era of the Super Bowl. Between 1920 and 1969 the Packers won 11 championships. Now that time frame goes past 1966, which is when we know the first Super Bowl to be. But in the early years of the Super Bowl, NFL champions would move on to play in the Super Bowls. Again as a Packers fan I am obligated to sate the fact that the Packers also won the first two Super Bowls under Bart Starr who was the MVP in both games.
Now on to the modern era of the Super Bowl. The Steelers are currently the most successful team in the Super Bowl winning 6 in the past 51 years, that is the most out of any other team. Next would be the Cowboys, and the 49'ers with 5 total Super Bowl victories. Now I feel the need to go to say that Super Bowl titles don't necessarily mean that that team was the best that whole season. It means they got into the playoffs and won all of their playoff games. Any true football fan knows that Dan Marino and the Dolphins in the 70's were one of the greatest teams of all time, yet they never won the Super Bowl. So I need to stress that Super Bowls are not the only statistic and factor to look at when determining which teams are great and which teams are not.
This year marks the 51st Super Bowl. From the NFC we have the Falcons who are only going into their second Super Bowl appearance, looking for their first win. From the AFC we have the Patriots coming into their record ninth appearance, looking for their fifth win. If Tom Brady can win on Sunday, he will pull away from Joe Montana and hold a record five individual Super Bowl wins. Either way history will be made whether it be a first for an organization or a fifth for an individual.
