Highlights from Rio

Some events caused tears of triumph, while others left some feeling dreadful and dejected.

This will be more of a rant, but I have noticed a few connections between events in Rio and the daily events we may experience back at home. Regardless of how incredible our athletes are, it's interesting to see how similar they are to us.

The first thing I want to acknowledge is the deal with crushes. If you are reading this now, there is a chance that you have developed an interest in someone special, a person near and dear to you. This is what Gold Medalist Simone Biles went through, too. As some of you may know, she absolutely adores former High School Misical Star Zac Efron, and she even has a life size cut out of him. Now can I just say that this side of Simone is just adorable? When I saw her reaction to meeting him, I couldn't help but squeal in delight.

The we be thing I wanted to "talk" about is the recent attacks against another amazing gymnast, Gabby Douglass. Now when I first saw her the year, she looked a little different because she did not smile as often and she is now the tallest girl in the team. Although she didn't seem to be the Gabby I adored four years ago, I did not love her any less. Speaking of her, I am sick of all f th criticism she has been receiving. She did not place her hand over her heart in the National Anthem, and she is my smiling as much. SO WHAT? Regardless, her feelings were extremely hurt, and she did not deserve to be treated like that. Despite all of the bullying, some people, including celebrities are still rooting her on, and so am I. We still love you Gabby, and we always will.

Before I rant about the next athlete, I wanted to share a quote that one of my teachers mentioned: "The greater you are, the harder you fall". Unfortunately, I think this is what is happening to Swimmer Ryan Lochte. Regardless of how famous a person is, any moral disruption is bound to undermine somebody. According t what I've seen in the news, Lochte apparently lied to the press about him and three other swimmers being robbed and held at gun point. It seems that they ruptured an entire bathroom, and they were not being robbed. I admire Lochte, but his behavior to me was just unacceptable. The story is being released to the entire world, and he should have been setting a good example for his fourth and for other countries. This just might hurt his reputation, but I hope he and the others learned a lesson.

The final rant I have is about Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive and a team member of Jamaica. Although he is frequently wining good in his matches, he still knows how to have fun. In one instance, my mom and I were watching him race the 200 meter dash. Among the other competitors was Andre De Grasse of Canada. Shortly before the race, De Grasse prepared to beat all of the others, including the legendary Bolt; nevertheless, Bolt proved him wrong... with a charming smile and a finger wave. The little act of brotherly love between the two racers was so cute, and made my heart and my mom's heart swell with live and laughter. How sneaky!

So this week was a pretty eventful one. There were difinitely some rough patches in the road, but all of them were pretty interesting to witness. Anything can happen, whether you are going for the gold, or going for your goals

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
