If you fall behind, run faster, never give up, never surrender, and rise up against the odds.
This past week was Greek Week at Iowa State, and it was full of tournaments, Olympic events, Karaoke competitions, all done by teams of sororities and fraternities. Unfortunately, due to unexpected events, my sorority lost half our team a few days before the kickoff of Greek Week, and our odds looked grim. Our team consisted of our chapter, and a smaller fraternity chapter, forcing us to redo our Karaoke song, Lip Sync routine, tournament rosters; we essentially started from scratch.
There's a saying that when you're at rock bottom, the only way to go is up. Instead of quitting, instead of throwing in the towel and saying that we were doomed, my sisters and our team defied the odds. We redid our entire Lip Sync routine in one night, having girls dress up as boys, re-blocking everything. We advanced to the finals in Karaoke despite starting over again, and had the loudest cheers in GreekLand.
We needed someone to save us, to pull us out of an unfortunate situation; to turn things around, and who could do that? Us. Our team, my sisters, we needed a hero, so that's what we became.
Thank you to my team, thank you for showing me why I chose to join my chapter. My sisters never give up, never stop fighting, and beat the odds. We are independent, strong, determined women, and my sisters inspire me to be a better woman every single day.
We couldn't have continued on without the fabulous men of our team. They never gave up, rolled with the punches, and gave every ounce of their beings to help us all be successful. They kept us positive, and gave us the motivation to keep fighting, and their support was never ending.
Thank you to everyone on my team for teaching me an invaluable lesson: giving up is never an option. I always knew that was true, but this past few weeks I've seen this statement lived out by every single person in our team.
