In 2013, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. With all of the trust we placed in our family medical care providers, some of which we’ve known for years, when my mom’s irregular mammogram was discovered we knew that we would take whatever steps our doctors advised for her too.

My mother, a nurse and caregiver for over 18 years has always been a critical thinker when it came to issues within her field. Although she was initially trusting that her doctors were looking out for her best interest, she had seen the effects that certain medical procedures like chemotherapy and radiation have had on many other cancer patients, one including her own father.

Through her research, she came to the realization that she did not want to take the course of action that was suggested to her. By doing this, she faced a lot of criticism from her friends, family and doctors (one of them even denied her all medical care if she refused to do things her way) but her mind could not be changed. She was determined to allow her body to heal itself naturally and do whatever she could with diet, exercise and rest to aid herself in the process.

That decision was the start of something beautiful. From the moment that my mother decided to take life by the horns and do it her way, the rest of our family supported and backed her up. This required us to change our entire lifestyle as a whole right along with her.

My mother kick started her journey to a better, cancer free, life by getting off of a medication that she had been on for 10 years in only two weeks using only fresh beet root juice, which has a list of side effects much shorter than the ones that can be found on the backs of pill bottles.

We replaced our cold medicine with fresh herbal teas grown in our backyard, extra doses of vitamin C, yoga, rest and assorted essential oils. We turned in our lotions (many of which contained carcinogens) for raw organic coconut oil and I personally exchanged my meat products (which are known to be pumped with hormones and other harmful substances) with more fruits and veggies.

Understanding that the pharmaceutical industry is a business was the first step to true healing. In order to keep a business going, there has to be a demand and many doctors and pharmaceutical companies do everything in their power to make sure that demand never subsides. For the past two years, I have not taken medicine at all and I feel better than I ever have before. I still catch colds from time to time, but they come few and far between and never last any longer than about three days.

Only a few weeks of dedication to my clean and stress-free lifestyle and diet was enough for me to recognize a clear difference in my body and overall self. After ridding myself of all of the harmful things I was letting into my body, there was no way that I would ever go back to the heaviness that I felt before.

I don’t believe that being dependent on different medications to live a regular life was ever how things were meant to be. I live a much happier and healthier life now that I have been taking advantage of the resources that were given to me by nature.

Ever since the day I stopped letting medical professionals instruct me on how to live my own life, I have been more free than ever. Just like my mother effectively freed herself from cancer and all of her other health problems.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
