Out of all of the holidays that could potentially be my personal favorite, Halloween wins by a long shot. It always has and, most likely, always will. Christmas is pretty fantastic, but why is it not number one? Simply because the decor is placed out in stores during late September or early October or even, sometimes, earlier than that. I'm sorry, but that's overkill. I know, it's a popular holiday but no other holiday is prepared for that far in advance. Thanksgiving? A lot of fantastic food, it's great. Valentine's is pretty spectacular...if you have someone to share it with. New Year's and Fourth of July are special because I really love the fireworks. But Halloween? Come on, let's face it, it's probably the most creative holiday out there.
1. Costumes.
For starters, no other holiday do you get to dress up as whatever you want and play with special effects makeup and fake blood, tissue, etc.
I mean sure, there are conventions throughout the year where you can get all dressed up for cosplay, but Halloween just brings out the more spooky scary element of outfits. And it's pretty awesome when you're out and about on Halloween night and see super rad costumes/makeup effects. Not to mention, it's simply just fun to dress up and be someone/something else for day (and night..) And the planning is a lot of fun too!
3. CANDY.
What's Halloween without some treats? Other holidays have candy too, but Halloween is the one where random people just give you candy. If that's not great, then please tell me what is.
4. Haunted attractions.
Hello haunted houses, ghost tours, and hay rides. Even for those who don't enjoy getting scared, these things are Halloween musts and always make the holiday that much more awesome.
5. Decorations.
I don't know about you, but I am with Halloween outdoor decor as I am with Christmas lights...I love riding around and seeing what people have come up with. Whether it looks like your yard was a vicious murder scene with caution tape and the works or a spooky cemetery replica or the perfect home for Dracula and Frankenstein or simply a display of Jack-o-lanterns, it's always a sight to see and enjoy.
6. Pumpkin carving!
I haven't carved a pumpkin since I was ten or so and I'm 21 now...but this year I changed that and remembered just how much fun pumpkin carving was. The drawing, the de-gutting of the pumpkin, the carving itself...it's all just super fun. This year my boyfriend and I decided to make a Legend of Zelda Tri-force jack-o-lantern and it turned out pretty rad!
7. The season.
Now maybe this shouldn't matter, but it helps explain why Halloween is my favorite holiday. It makes sense. Autumn is my favorite season; October is my favorite month; when I played basketball in high school, the season began in late October; and, finally, my birthday is literally the day before Halloween. So, with all that put into context, it makes sense why I lean towards Halloween cx
8. Movies and TV specials.
I'm a sucker for horror films and as a child, holiday special cartoons were an absolute must. I can't begin to even try to count the amount of times I've seen the Spongebob Halloween special. And don't even ask about Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas or Coraline because it's much too high to consider.
9. It's not just for children...
This is probably one of the biggest items to stress. Halloween isn't just a kids' holiday. Sure, it's adorable to see all these little kids dressed up as their favorite cartoon character or animal and being shuttled door-to-door saying variations of "trick-r'-treat?" But let's be real, Halloween is for everyone. Children, teens, adults...even grandma! Whenever someone says something about the cut-off age being 12-years-old or whatever it is, it annoys me because why ruin the Halloween spirit? There's nothing wrong it. It's for everyone.
With all that said, I'm sure I'm missing some reasons why this is my absolute favorite holiday, but these basically cover it.I just love Halloween and everything about it. Like I said, it's one of my favorite holidays and it probably always will. So to all those who will be participating and celebrating tomorrow, be safe and have a spooktacular time!
