31 Signs That You Grew Up In Maryland

Growing up in Maryland has certain characteristics that other states do not appreciate or understand. There is a specific type of Maryland culture that defines us. People stare at us for screaming "O" at a sporting event if they are from out of state. We also are terrified when someone hasn't heard of Old Bay. Here are 31 signs that you grew up in Maryland.

You know you grew up in Maryland when...

1) ...you own the Maryland flag in some capacity. It may be a shirt with the flag or the actual flag itself. We are the only state where people actually wear our flag.

2) ...you understand that a summer without crabs is a summer not worth anything. Knowing how to crack a crab is natural.

3) ...you adore Berger cookies.

4) ...you've heard of the term "hon" and everyone assumes you speak like you're from Hampden.

5) ...you scream "O" during the National Anthem no matter where you are.

6) ...you understand what the DMV is (not the place to get your drivers license).

7)...Ravens fan or Redskins fan? You'll support both teams.

8)...Orioles games are a must every summer, no matter how good or bad they are doing.

9)...the inconsistency of the weather doesn't even phase you.

10)...someone asks you where you are from you say your county.

11)...as a child you thought you saw Disney World.

12)...out of state people have sung "Good Morning Baltimore" to you.

13)...you understand that Baltimore vs Towson vs PG vs Hoco vs St. Mary's County are all completely different cultures.

14)...Natty Boh.

15)...Old Bay is a lifestyle. Fries without it is pointless. Point blank.

16)...your senior week/beach week was at Ocean City.

17)...you've heard "the Redskins are going to be good this year" every season.

18)...you or someone you know has this crab sticker on the back of the car.

19)...people assume you love going to the harbor.

20)...Royal Farms chicken is a perfect meal.

21)...you dreaded taking the MSA every year.

22)...no matter where in MD you are from, your childhood consisted of Port Discovery at some point.

23)...you remember the blizzard of 2010 where you got at least a week off from school.

24)...you've had to explain to people that University of Maryland is not the only good college here.

25)...someone in your family goes to Towson.

26)...you don't know if you are from the North or South.

27)...people assume you are from Baltimore.

28)...you've gone to so many DC museums for field trips.

29)...you are always asked what high school you went to.

30)...Lax bro.

31)...you always see people from your past at the state fair.

We love you Maryland!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
