A few weeks ago, my friend and a fellow Odyssey contributor Elma Letic wrote an article why she's a vegetarian. Upon reading her article, I found it very impactful about how she became one and how much it meant to her.
I'm a huge meat eater, my favorite meal of all time is always going to a medium rare New York Strip steak. When I mentioned to my friends that I intended to do this, some of them jokingly said I couldn't last a meal without having some meat, but I was very determined to give a go.
I had honestly never experimented with going on as a full vegetarian for more than a day at a time. So when I decided to become one for about a week to see how it impacted my life, I was curious to see the results of how it would change me. What did I notice?
Well to be fair, I found myself sleeping a lot more and not as hungry. As opposed to my standard three meals(or sometimes four) a day, I was getting it down to one or two. Additionally, I found myself sleeping a lot more, especially on my days off. I literally slept the entire week away, to the point where one of my friends thought I was missing, simply due to the fact that I wasn't around as often as I used to be. I also thought my mood was a lot better, just in general. Everything seemed calmer.
I didn't deal with any temptations from meat at all, not to an extreme mouth watering extent. I admit there were times when I really did crave a chicken sandwich, but it's nothing that I couldn't get past after eating something else.
Once my time ended as an experimenting vegetarian, I didn't go straight to eating a massive meat feast, things just went back to normal. Overall, to me at least, I didn't really change the way I'll look towards vegetarianism in general, It's not the sort of diet I truly want to live with, but after giving it a try I can't help by denying the improvements I noticed. While some might argue that sleeping more and eating less aren't improvements, knowing myself, I do consider them as such, especially given my irregular sleep patterns to begin with.
But to be fair, I think at one point or another I would like to try doing this sort of thing again. I only did this over a week, and to be fair, that might be a long enough time period to properly gauge the impact this new diet would do to me. At one point or another, I might try doing for a longer period. Perhaps, I might even give a go for a month next time.
I'd really recommend trying to be a vegetarian for a while, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and I actually want to try do it again at one point or another.
