Growing up with brothers, I didn't know how I would fit in a huge group of girls hanging out 24/7, on and off campus. Luckily for me, it is the best thing by far that's happened this year. Here are some of the wonderful things I have experienced during my first year as a sorority girl.
.
Your closet expands — Not that my brothers didn't dress well, but I was rarely inclined to dig through their wardrobes when in need of something cute. Having so many new best friends your age means at least one (or ten) of them are bound to share your taste in clothes and accessories. And of course they couldn't be more any more generous, be grateful for you sisters so you don't have to spend $300 on all the semi-formal dresses you'll need.
Your social network expands — Hello, 400 new followers and friends on Facebook! Meeting so many girls from so many different towns gives you a diverse group of friends, as well as a diverse group of connections. You never know whose aunt can get you a coveted internship, or whose roommate is the exact Calculus tutor you needed to make an A+. Your closest sisters can't wait to share you with all their friends and you can't wait to meet them either; good luck remembering everyone's names!
You never have to be lonely — College is a trying time for everyone. You are surrounded by peers on and off campus all the time, but it can still be hard to make close connections. Having sisters by your side makes it easier to adjust because they are always there for you to listen when you need them and give advice when you seek it. 9 out of 10 times someone will respond to your message asking to go to Starbucks and study (or go to Taco Bell at 2 a.m. when the studying is just too much to handle). Sisters make great therapists, tutors, physical trainers, stylists and movie buddies; you'll never have to be alone unless you want to.
They've got your back, no matter what — Everyone likes to say girls are catty and mean, but I have experienced nothing but kindness from my sisters. Of course, any large group of girls is bound to have some drama, but at the end of the day any one of us would defend one another in a heartbeat. Whether it be a vicious rumor or a rude boy, sisters will come to dry your tears and defend you in any situation. It's amazing how loyal these girls are after only knowing one another for a few weeks or months. ~Sisterhood is real~
They change your outlook on life — Everyone has a different story, and hearing about your sisters' past trials and triumphs can dramatically alter how you reflect on your own life. If they're going through a hard time, you learn to appreciate all the wonderful things you've got going for you. And how important it is to never fail in supporting those depending on you. Your sisters who have succeeded far beyond their years help to motivate you to reach heights you never could have imagined. Seeing them chase their dreams is an unbelievable motivator to make the most of your brief years of college.
No one will make you laugh harder — There's nothing better than staying up too late studying or talking with your sisters until you are all completely delirious and giggling at absolutely nothing. In addition to the pledge class clown (we all have one), there are so many girls who will never fail to make you laugh until you want to cry over inside jokes and weird things they say. No one else would be able to persuade you to do crazy things in the middle of the night just for a laugh and a memory that will last beyond your four years together. You have a special bond with the girls you can be completely yourself with, no matter how quirky you are.
You'll never know how much love you can have for them — The transition from being pretty much the only girl in my entire extended family to having an extended family entirely of girls was pretty major for me. I never knew I could hold so much joy in my heart as a result of growing closer to these girls and watching them mature over these past months into the collegiate women they are now. No matter which sorority you are a part of you know the feeling, these girls that go from basically strangers on Bid Day to your Ride-Or-Die buddies mean the world to you, college would be absolutely unimaginable without them.
I don't complain about growing up without sisters anymore because I was blessed enough to be able to choose and be chosen, to join the girls I call my family now. Day or night I can count on them, and they can count on me. Especially if they want to go to Taco Bell.
