Its official. Gary Johnson will not participate in the first debate of this presidential election season. To qualify for the presidential debate, the ex-governor of New Mexico needed to earn a minimum of 15% in the polls selected by the Commission of Presidential Debates. He was only able to garnish 8.4%.
Gary Johnson did fail to qualify but does this mean he is not a legitimate candidate for the presidency? Personally, I strongly believe that the Libertarian nominee deserves a fair chance to voice his opinions. He may represent a middle ground for those voters who do not find common ground with the qualifiers for the presidential debate, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Here are the stances on the most popular of topics in this presidential election season.
1.) Immigration
For the Republican candidate, his stance on immigration has been his most frequently played card. From the start of his presidential campaign, Trump has opposed any type of immigration. It does not matter if they are refugees coming from areas overrun with war violence or immigrants from the southern border looking for a better opportunity in life. Gary Johnson sides with Hillary more on this issue. He does not believe in building a wall or mass deportation. Instead of trying to keep out this who want to come to this country, he wants to make it easier for them. His plan is make it easier for immigrants to obtain work visas as he believes it will make it easier to keep track of who is in the country.
2.) Previous Political Experience
Gary Johnson was elected as the governor of New Mexico in 1995 and he served for 8 years. Hence, he sits in the middle when it comes to political experience. Hillary sits on one side of the spectrum because she is the definition of a career politician. She has served as the Frist Lady, New York Senator, and Secretary of State. Meanwhile, Trump has none. He is has been a businessman his entire life.
3.) Gun Control
When it comes to gun, Johnson reflects the views of most Republicans. He has pro-gun stance and thinks that most gun laws are ineffective. He aligns with Donald Trump who has been advocate for the 2nd Amendment rights. The Democratic nominee as expected leans to the left on the issue. She believes in the commonsense gun laws which Johnson believes are ineffective.
4.) LGBT Rights
As a libertarian, Gary Johnson is believer in letting the people have their rights. Like his stance on guns, he believes that the LGBT community should have the god given American rights as every other American citizen. He has made it clear that they deserve the freedom to get married.
5.)Foreign Policy
As conflict continues on the Middle East, a big topic has been how America should handle its foreign policy and military. Gary Johnson believes that military does not need to be expanded and that this country should reduce its presence in foreign countries. He backs his stance by claiming that this will help reduce America’s spending and debt. Hillary has plenty experience dealing with foreign policy by her reputation is tainted by the Benghazi events and her flip-flopping stance on the conflict in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Trump has gone all out and has said that he will go to the extent to killing innocent women and children to win the battle in the Middle East.
To make it clear, I am not supporting or endorsing Gary Johnson. I am simply attempting to let people know that if that after the upcoming debate if they do not find common ground with either of the two candidates, there is another option for them. These outliers can rally together and get Gary Johnson into the second presidential debate.
