Fun Summer Workouts

Summer should be spent outside, so don't hide behind your treadmill.

Summer is the season of swimsuits, high waisted shorts, dresses, and eating way too much ice cream. If you are anything like me and refuse to give up your addiction to cookie dough with sprinkles, chances are, you are beginning to remember that thing called working out that no one seems to want to believe is real. Going to the gym during the summer is like running in a sauna, and it makes me feel like I am not taking advantage of the gorgeous weather outside. So, this summer I decided to dump my elliptical and embrace the great outdoors. And believe it or not, these workouts were pretty fun.

1. Hiking

The best kind of workout is the one you can share with your friends (or your dog). Hiking is a great way to get exercise and you actually get a reward for your hard work. I like instant gratification as much as the next person, but there is something satisfying about reaching the top of a mountain. It's also a great workout for your whole body. If you're feeling adventurous and you want to bond with your friends or family by sweating bullets and then sleeping in a tent together, go for an overnight hike. Camping is never a bad idea.

2. Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding is probably not the hardest workout you will ever experience, but it is fun. Rent a paddle board for a couple hours and give your arms a workout. I highly recommend taking one out just before sunset; it's as equally calming as it is beautiful. For all the people out there blessed with coordination and balance, try doing yoga on a paddle board. It's yoga with extra motivation to not fall in the water.

3. Beach Work Out

The beach is a great place to relax, but it is also a perfect spot to work out. I like to wake up early to run in the summer, but running on the beach is a whole other monster. Sand sprints are fun when you race against someone else, and the sand acts as extra resistance for your body. Sunrise and sunset yoga on the beach is a great way to both start and end the day. Go swimming after a game of beach volleyball and work out without even trying. Rock that bikini and feel good.

4. Specialty classes

Although these are usually indoor activities, I personally do not have time to take a dance class or a kick boxing class during the school year. Summer is the perfect time to try something new, and taking a hot yoga class or learning some self defense moves while toning your whole body might just be exactly what you need to get out of your summer funk.

5. Horseback Riding

If there is one thing I have learned about riding horses, it's that it is not as easy as my sister makes it look. Horseback riding is a great workout because you have to keep your core and legs tight. Go on a trail ride or take a few lessons and you will see that it is not just the horse that gets a workout.

I hope these ideas inspire you to get outside and be adventurous. Even going for a walk can be a workout (especially when you get lost easily). Working out does not have to consist of running on a treadmill and watching The Price is Right. You can burn calories and have fun at the same time. It's allowed :)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
