With the nonstop negativity we see and encounter in everyday life, it's about time we start encouraging positivity and, more specifically, encouraging and uplifting women. In today's world, women are under near constant scrutiny.
"She's too fat."
"She didn't do her hair today? Gross."
"Does she even own anything other than leggings and sweatshirts?"
"She'd be so much prettier if she'd just do her makeup the right way."
"Another slice of pizza? Really? You're sure that's a good idea?"
These are just a fraction of the things girls hear, and even say, every day. And that's not OK.
Women shouldn't be analyzed and judged like we're products or material things that are disposable, invaluable, replaceable. Women shouldn't be seen as b*tches or rude when they're strong, independent, determined, ambitious, or any other quality that is seen as admirable in men. Women shouldn't be treated with anything other than respect when they decide to wear what they're comfortable in, dye their hair, get tattoos, get piercings, or do anything at all with their own bodies.
Women, and people in general, should be celebrated and congratulated for being unique and just simply being alive.
So for those women out there that could use some uplifting messages, or for those of you with women in your life who could use some encouragement, here are some of my favorite videos and campaigns for empowering women.
Always has produced some truly inspiring messages for all women, no matter their age, skin color, occupation, or anything else that makes us unique. They've created the hashtag #LikeAGirl that you can use to share your stories or uplifting words with others on social media, like this thread on Twitter. They're working to change the way women and things like "like a girl" are seen and interpreted.
Facebook can be uplifting when it wants to be, too. For example, I found these next few videos just scrolling through my timeline:
Dove has been working on some amazing campaigns. This next video is about changing the way women see themselves, but you can find others they've done by following this link, and I strongly encourage you to do so. They're doing some pretty incredible work over there.
And there are so many more companies out there doing these great things. With the whole "Barbie's new look" thing that happened a while ago, they're also doing some work like these other companies. They've created ads like this that help young girls stay true to themselves and are using the amazing Gabby Douglas as a role model. They have Career Dolls, World Culture Dolls, and the new "shapes" dolls that help relate to girls of every kind.
If you'd like to see more, there are constantly new trends being made on various platforms, like the #IAmAFeminist and #BlackWomenDidThat trends on Twitter, and you can watch hundreds of videos like this on YouTube. With these, of course, come the negative comments and rude people out there that apparently feed on degrading and insulting other people, so be aware that you may encounter things like that, but I personally think all of the positive pieces out there are worth running into a few idiots here and there.
Basically, women should be encouraged to be themselves and do what they like. And as a woman, I encourage you, no matter who or what you are, to send these videos or similar messages to someone you love, and to share any other videos I didn't include but deserve recognition to me by leaving them in the comments section. I promise I'll watch them all!
