Being a “Fair-weather Fan” is essentially the worst thing a “fan” of any person, team, group etc. can be. For those of you who don’t know, a fair-weather fan is essentially a person who claims to be a supporter of something when its convenient for them, or when the person/thing they’re following is doing well, but then when they are “supporting” loses, or does poorly, they instantly change their views and make it seem like they were never truly interested in the first place. Fair-weather fans are more or less bandwagon fans, with no true loyalty to “their team”. For example, a little while ago when Rhonda Rousey lost her fight to Holly Holm in UFC 193, so many people were claiming to have seen Rousey’s loss coming and “weren’t surprised at all”, when just weeks -nay- days, prior, they were hyping Rousey’s fight up and acting as if they were her number one groupie.
This epidemic is just something I will never quite understand. Being a supporter to big names and winning teams is certainly not the “cool” thing to do, I mean its not like you’re really contributing to their success at all, so why is the fair-weather fan base becoming a bigger and bigger following? As lousy as it can be sometimes, being a fan means sticking with your team whether they’re undefeated or doing really bad. As a fairly competitive person I can easily see how people can get frustrated, or even discouraged with their team, but there’s a big difference between feeling exasperated and feeling entitled. While it may be the job of the team to play to the best of their abilities and do what they can to win, that doesn’t mean their job is to win. There is no reason at all for someone to hate on a person or team when they lose, because that’s part of the experience. Competing and being in a series of competitions is a never-ending cycle of winning, losing, humbling, and coming back better, and there’s no room for know-it-all peacocks to flop back and forth between supporting and dissing.
Essentially, what I’m saying is if you’re going to spend your time watching sports and following things like it, then chose a team and stick to it, don’t flop away and act like a know-it-all when just moments before you were gung-ho about the same team.
