PHILADELPHIA – The most exciting, three day event for NFL football fans, the 2017 NFL Draft, kicked off last night, with thousands of fans gathered together to witness their favorite NFL teams selecting talented, young college football athletes, hoping to improve their organization and possibly get their teams to the postseason. Headlines abounded around round one, with the Cleveland Browns undecided on who they should take with the number one overall pick: would it be Myles Garrett, a defensive end/linebacker from Texas A & M University, or Mitchell Trubisky, a quarterback from the University of North Carolina? After ten minutes, the decision was made: Myles Garrett is heading to Cleveland.
That was the no-brainer selection. Throughout the first round of the draft, several trades occurred, most of them involving quarterbacks Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes, and Deshaun Watson. The Chicago Bears stunned draft experts and NFL analysts by trading up one slot with the San Francisco 49ers to draft Trubisky, in spite of the fact they already signed free agent QB Mike Glennon earlier this offseason. The Kansas City Chiefs jumped up 17 spots to trade with Buffalo to draft Mahomes, of Texas Tech University. And the Pittsburgh Steelers, at pick number 30, took Wisconsin outside linebacker T.J. Watt, younger brother of Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.
Notable selections in round 2 of the draft included the Minnesota Vikings picking Florida State running back Dalvin Cook, the Cleveland Browns drafting Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, and the Cincinnati Bengals drafted troubled Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon. Highlights from the third round of the NFL Draft include the New York Giants drafting the potential successor to Eli Manning, California quarterback Davis Webb and the Pittsburgh Steelers drafting Pittsburgh running back and life-threatening injury survivor James Conner.
What will we expect in the final rounds? Who knows! The 5-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots didn’t make their first selection until late in the third round, due to the fact they traded for Saints wide receiver Brandon Cooks earlier in the offseason, having to give up their first-round pick (the 32nd overall). The question for these drafted players will now be this: who will have the biggest impact for his new team this season, and for years to come? The answer is this: we shall see.
