7 Practical Ways To Relieve Stress

Stress is a natural challenge of life; that we students often experience due to the high demands of both school and work. Frequently, we try to balance too many things at once, and we try to handle our stress by decompressing it. Both of which, are actions that further increase our stress levels. However, activities that can serve as a way of meditation, or relaxation are ways in which stress can be relieved. Thus, the following list includes practical activities that not only play as a distraction but rejuvenates the mind, body, and soul.

1. Exercising

This activity, is one that can be performed individually or accompanied by a friend. Either being a great way of distracting negative thoughts, focussing on the present and encouraging better wellness and fitness.

2. Listening to calm music

Instrumentals and nature-inspired sound are the best forms of calming music. Music can also be listened to while participating in the other activities which will also support for relief. Calming music can also be used as a sleep aid, and as a tool for relaxation and contemplation.

3. Writing

Writing is a way in which one can express them self, their thoughts, concerns, and a way to release all of these aspects. For me, I create a list of things that I am thankful for, and I journal motivational quotes and verses that combat my anxieties.

4. Serving your community

Serving your community is a great way to focus your energy on helping others and give you a sense of accomplishment, that in turn creates positive feelings. All of which, not only relieves stress but gives back to your community.

5. Talking

Talking to a friend or even to yourself out loud, are great ways to process stress and for coming up with solutions to battle it. Talking with a friend gives you the opportunity to receive encouragement and maybe even guidance.

6. Laughing

Many recent studies have shown that laughter, can be used to relax the body, release your feel-good chemicals (endorphins), and can ease stress levels. Laughing is a free activity, it requires little physical action, and spreads joy like a wildfire.

7. Be mindful and thoughtful

This approach is more of an attitude than an activity. The premise is to be cautious but also meditative when reflecting on life and life's challenges. There are, however, activities such as meditation, and yoga that can promote these attitudes in a physical form.

Before participating in these activities, it would be beneficial to identify your stressors and write down your solution to easing them. Being organized is key to accomplishing your goals, so create a checklist or another written form, that allows you to keep track of your progress to show how you have overcome your stress. Remember to keep a positive attitude, to ask for help when needed, to be open to trying new activities, to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses, to challenge yourself, and to not let your stress stop you from enjoying life.

Whether you are a college, high school, or graduate student, we all know the hardships that come with education. Take the time now, to set aside what may be causing your stress, and focus on activities that diminish and free all negative thoughts and allow for restoration to take place.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating.
