EA Sports creates a FIFA video game every year for soccer fans to play as their favorite players. The covers have become a statement piece, showcasing iconic soccer players from over the years. Past covers have featured superstars such as David Platt, Erik Thorstvedt, Frank de Boer, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi. Historically, the covers only recognized the great male soccer players of the time.
However, FIFA 16, that will be released in September 2016, will feature the first female soccer player in the history of the game. Lionel Messi will share the spotlight with U.S. Women's National Team player Alex Morgan.
Three days ago, Alex Morgan posted the cover picture on her Instagram page with the caption, "I’m so honored to be featured on the cover of #FIFA16. Thank you @EASPORTSFIFA! https://www.easports.com/fifa/women."
The prestigious honor was awarded to Alex Morgan shortly after the USWNT won their third World Cup. The forward has also earned Olympic Gold, three Algarve Cups and a CONCACAF Player of the Year Award. It's no wonder the soccer player was considered and later chosen to be on the FIFA 16 cover.
Not only will a woman be on the cover of the game, but there is an option to play as a women's national team in the game. The available teams include USA, Germany, France, Sweden, England, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy, China and Mexico. The women's teams can only play against other women's teams, according to EASports.com.
Women in sports have not always been given the recognition that they truly deserve. Finally, people are starting to praise women for their athletic achievements through sponsors, victory parades and now, video games. Alex Morgan is enforcing the importance of women in sports and helping to change how women athletes are perceived; not as women in sports but just as athletes.
