Relationship goals. It’s a term that our generation has created to describe what we want in our own relationships. Whether it be something as superficial as being called someone’s #womancrushwednesday or finding that someone who would go to the ends of the world to make us happy, we can’t help but look at others' relationships and wish that we had the same for ourselves. Most people look to their own friends or celebrities when searching for relationship inspiration, but I prefer to look somewhere a little more fictional. There are a few couples from popular books, movies and television shows that I believe embody real relationship goals.
1. Marshall & Lily ("How I Met Your Mother")
They may be the most awkward and oddest couple in television, but gosh darn it, you can’t help but love them. The fact that they are so weird and comfortable with each other makes them even more likable. They can be themselves around each other 100 percent of the time and have stuck with each other through thick and thin. Even when they broke up and Lily went off to California, you never gave up hope that they’d find their way back to their better half. There was no reacher or settler in this relationship.
2. Jack & Rose ("Titanic")
Jack Dawson was the poor kid just looking for a chance and Rose came from a life of wealth and privilege. It was a love story that crossed all social boundaries in their time. Their whirlwind romance was one that tugged on your heart strings in every way, but then you tie in the fact that their setting is the doomed Titanic? Pass the tissues. Jack saved Rose’s life not once but twice! And can we go over the fact that they were only 17?! We’ll never let go, Jack!
3. Cory & Topanga ("Boy Meets World")
Every 90s kid questioned their awkward middle school relationship because we weren’t as madly in love with our significant others as Cory and Topanga were with each other. They set a new standard to the high school sweetheart, considering they started dating in the fifth grade and managed to survive life together (we’ll ignore their short-lived breakups). And now with "Girl Meets World," we get to see all of our childhood dreams come true and see the two as married parents. Wow, that makes me feel old.
4. Jim & Pam ("The Office")
Fans of "The Office" were forced to wait to see this relationship bloom. We had to watch both of them in relationships that were obviously not making them as happy as they could’ve made each other, but I think that taught viewers an amazing life lesson. Jim and Pam were just friends at first and their friendship grew into one of the most beautiful television romances our generation has seen. I mean, once they finally started dating, Jim bought Pam’s engagement ring a week later, proving to us all that it is possible to get out of the friend zone.
5. Noah & Allie ("The Notebook")
First of all, it’s Ryan Gosling. Sign me up already. But "The Notebook" was the first in a line of Nicholas Spark’s books turned into movies that every high school and college aged girl cried into their pint of Ben & Jerry’s over. You get to see their relationship for all that it is, the good and the bad. When you also tie in the fact that the story is being told by an aged Noah to his beloved Allie who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, this story becomes one of the most tragically beautiful stories we’ve chosen to watch every time we have a girl’s night in. I mean, who didn’t completely lose their minds when they passed away in each other’s arms? If you said you didn’t, stop lying to yourself.
6. Ross & Rachel ("Friends")
So their relationship was pretty touch and go for 10 whole seasons, but every "Friends" fan knew that Ross and Rachel were just meant to be. Down in his little nerdy heart, Ross knew how much he truly loved Rachel despite how much of a princess she could be at times. I mean, I think everyone knows where they were when Ross was scared half to death that Rachel wouldn’t get off of the plane and made all of our dreams come true by getting off the plane. Was there even a doubt in our minds, though? Not one. Because he was her lobster and she was his.
7. Ron & Hermione ("Harry Potter")
Ron and Hermione are the classic example of enemies turned friends turned soulmates. Over the course of the book and movie series, we had the privilege of watching their love blossom. Makes you think about the people you looked over at the ripe age of 12. Oh, and if you are one of those people who believe that Harry was actually supposed to end up Hermione, you are sadly mistaken and I will gladly argue that till I'm blue in the face. #ronmione4lyfe
