The Real Definition Of Feminism

You know what pisses me off? When people say that they know what feminism is, yet when you ask them what they think it is they come out with this disgusting MEDIA POTRYAED definition that is nowhere near what it actually means to be a feminist. If you haven’t heard some of these horrible “definitions” here are a few that have been shouted at me over and over

Feminist are just women that hate men.

Women who are just “offended” by the “truth.”

Women who play the victim role to much.

People who want equality, only when it is convenient for them.

These are disgusting, horrible, atrocious definitions that society has (not just recently) but always attached to someone who calls themselves a feminist. Many people within our society do not really know what it means to be a feminist they don’t look up information; they just believe what they see on their Facebook or believe what they hear on the radio.

If you want to know the true definition of feminism try to BE A SMART EDUCATED PERSON AND LOOK IT UP FROM A CREDIBLE SOURCE. So that’s what I did… for you… The definition based from Merriam-Webster Dictionary on what a feminism is,

  1. The theory (or belief) of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.
  2. Organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.

For those of you who don’t like Merriam-Webster Dictionary, I'll even offer you the definition from the Oxford Dictionary, which says

  1. Noun – The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of political, social and economic equality to men.

Now that you know the actual definition of feminism you can say with confidence “I know what feminism is…” NOT!

But now that you know what the definition of Feminism is you can start to learn about feminism and being a feminist. I know more than half of the people reading this have already clicked their red X (or are about to), but to those of you who have not clicked their red X (and are not going to), then Congratulations! You actually want to learn.

Numerous stigma’s and stereotypes have been placed feminism that by the media is that we are “bra burning, men are the enemy” types of people. But that is untrue. We want equality for all. And no I do not want equality for when it is “convenient to me.” I, as a feminist, want EQUALITY FOR ALL. I don’t give a %^$* what race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, or whatever else media has labeled us to be.

Does this mean that all of this isn’t present in today’s world? Of course not, that is why I am standing up. I am tired of these people around the world bad mouthing women, girls, and feminism/feminists because of the “bad apples” (that you and media) seem to label them as.

I became a feminist when I took my white middle class educated able body goggles off and actually looked at how messed up our society is. What made me realized how these goggles were fogging up my view of the world? When I started to realize the impact that society has on children. All the sudden there were more little children in my life who just happen to be girls. After they entered my life I would constantly hear (and disprove to them) like “I can’t do this because I am a girl” or “that’s a boy thing I can do that/play with that.” This was my tipping point of tearing off those goggles.

Here is where I stand. There needs to be a STOP to the stigma, stereotypes and bad representation of feminism and feminist by media. YOU AS A PART OF “WORKING” SOCIETY needs to help stop the media and your fellow people from spreading these misconstrued ideas and definitions of feminism/feminist.

Just stop. Join the fight instead.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
