Fasten your seat belts, here comes another crash course in the definition of feminism:
Some may still be a bit confused, no worries, here is a quote by the great author, speaker, and activist, bell hooks. Feel free to take notes:
It's almost insulting to humans in general that humanity still cannot quite grasp this concept. Then again, there are multiple racist, sexist, classist, bigots competing for a presidential nomination for one of the world's greatest superpowers. Anyway, it's really not that hard of a concept to understand, some just chose to fight it because they're comfortable with oppression/being oppressed, imbalance, and uncertainty of future generations to come. I hope your notebook is still out, because I have the most effective reactions and refutes to shut down these said fights.
1. "I'm not oppressed and I am not a victim!"
I hate to disappoint, (actually, in the name of education, I love it), but yes, yes you are oppressed. If you have never felt limited in any circumstance throughout your life because of the gender you identify as (man or woman), then there is a good chance you are numb to the patriarchal society the world exists in today. You may not see the social, economic, and academic barriers that are placed between you and amounted success compared to men, but they are there and they are not going to be smashed with a passive attitude.
2. "I like wearing makeup and I like fashion."
THANK YOU FOR PROVING A FEMINIST POINT! I love it too! I love shopping, I spend an obscene amount of money on makeup, and I own over 30 pair of shoes. However, wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where people don't assume I love all of these things because I am a woman and these are just feminine things that women do? It's not because I am a woman, it's because that is what holds my interest. Society sees makeup and attractive clothing as ploys to attract men. I do my makeup because I like how I look with it. Do these things for you, not for society.
3. "I want my husband to take care of me, I don't mind staying at home."
That is another fantastic point. You are absolutely fine to desire that life. Want to know why? Because it's your choice. By choosing to stay at home and assume a domestic life, you are actually assisting in the fight for feminist victory. BUT, sacrificing your goals, career, and aspirations because you and/or your partner assumes you will stay home and you will do all of the housework, that is where the argument falters.
4. "Feminists are man-haters."
I want to make it very clear that anyone is allowed to disagree with an argument. However, I do not dismiss a man's argument or opinion simply because they are a man. Want to know why? Because I consider them as equal to me. Therefore, the only thing I should consider in an argument is their point. I don't hate men and I don't try to rise above them. I try to rise to their level in society, because that's what equality is. Also, men are a crucial component to feminism. It's not just a woman's fight. It's humanity's fight.
5. "Feminists are manly-looking, bra-burning, lesbians."
If your shallow mind forces you to only consider looks, here is your segment of the lesson: Pictures of self-proclaimed feminists

Recognize anyone? Okay great, moving on.
Even if feminists were exclusively "manly-looking, bra-burning, lesbians," is that supposed to be insulting? If it is, that argument destroys itself. If it's not, the argument is irrelevant. There is no universal haircut, sexual orientation, dress code, activity, class, gender, or ability one must agree upon before deciding to join the fight. Can you imagine how contradictory that would be?
6. "I can't do all the work a man does."
Since when does changing a tire and washing dishes follow a particular gender? Oh wait, always because that's what society decided to tell young children learning about life. You can fix a flat, and you can also fix a mean dinner. These activities do not have explicit instructions for only men or only women to do. And if you can't, have your husband do it, have your wife do it, have your dentist do it, have your dog do it. It doesn't matter.
7. "Men are oppressed, too."
SAY WHAT??? If only there was some type of movement that works to have equality between the sexes... oh wait.
It is 100 percent accurate that men also face judgement and barriers created by society. It is not correct to say they're "oppressed." Since (white) men have the majority of the political, economical, and social power, they are the oppressors. Even when they don't mean to be. In order to not be the oppressor, one should consider being conscious about what they assume about women, people of different races, people of different classes, and people of different abilities. Oh friend, I have just the group for you.
8. "I'd rather be one of the guys, feminists just complain about being a girl."
People: I urge you to stop trying to use these arguments as valid ones. They usually only further prove a feminist argument. Stop fearing the word, stop fearing the progress. Understand what the movement actually means.
Of course, there are many other arguments that can be refuted, however, I think this is a good start for all you newbies wanting to shut down the "menenists" of the world.
