Fall 2016 Movie Preview
Parade

2016 is entering its final stages, and that means the best movie season of the year is upon us. After a year of very few ups (Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Don't Breathe, Finding Dory, Zootopia) and many downs (Independence Day: Resurgence, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warcraft, Zoolander 2, The Boss, X-Men Apocalypse, etc.), we need the fall movie season more than ever.

It's typically a season filled with festival movies, which are vying for Oscar consideration, and blockbusters, which are hoping to capitalize on the holiday season movie-going crowd. Here's a breakdown of the most notable movies coming out for the rest of the year.

September 23

The Magnificent Seven

A remake of the 1960 classic, The Magnificent Seven stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt as vigilantes, who help a village defend themselves against savage thieves.

Goat

This movie takes a peek inside the world of the fraternity. A 19-year-old boy enrolls in college and pledges his actual brother's fraternity. It seems gritty and dark, and it was an official selection at Sundance.

September 30

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Directed by Tim Burton and based on a best-selling book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children follows a young boy named Jacob who discovers a place for people with special abilities like him. It's like X-Men if X-Men were directed by Tim Burton.

Deepwater Horizon

Based on the true 2010 event, Deepwater Horizon tells the tale of an oil rig which explodes, creating the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Dylan O'Brien, and Kate Hudson.

October 7

The Birth of a Nation

It's been hard for Nate Parker to promote this movie, considering his recent controversy. However, the film has been receiving positive reviews, and is generating significant awards buzz. It tells the story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, who organizes an uprising in the South.

The Girl On The Train

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, The Girl on the Train tells the story of a woman who becomes involved in a missing persons case, while on a train. It stars Emily Blunt (who is amazing), and is directed by Tate Taylor (The Help, Get On Up).

October 21

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

A sequel to 2012's Jack Reacher, Tom Cruise is back to helm this film. The IMDb synopsis says, "Jack Reacher must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name. On the run as a fugitive from the law, Reacher uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change his life forever." Cruise has been putting in good performances lately, and I know there are some people excited for this.

Boo! A Madea Halloween

I've never thought the Madea movies were very funny, but I have to admit that this trailer made me laugh. I think it's an interesting concept to make Madea interact with scary movie cliches, and I think many people will definitely go see it.

October 28

Inferno

This film is the next chapter in The Da Vinci Code series. Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard, the film follows Robert Langdon as he wakes up with amnesia, and must trek across Europe to combat a deadly plot.

Rings

I hate horror movies, and am so incredibly uninterested in this movie. However, I know there will be a huge audience for this, especially being so close to Halloween. It's the third film in the series, and the trailer is pretty creepy.

November 4

Doctor Strange

This movie is probably Marvel's biggest risk to date, and I just thoroughly don't know what to expect. The studio has a history of turning big risks into big rewards (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, etc.) so hopefully this movie continues that pattern. I happen to think it will. Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton are all world-class actors, and the trailers have looked pretty great, so I'm excited.

Trolls

You may not know this, but Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling" is actually from this movie. I don't know what that says about the quality of this film, but it could be great for families. This is especially true because it doesn't seem to have much competition in that genre until Moana comes out.

November 11

Arrival

Gosh. This movie looks epic. It has grade-A talents like Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. It has the director of Prisoners and Sicario. It has aliens!!! It's going to be epic, and seems to be different than the typical "Aliens come down to earth" movie.

November 18

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

This movie is going to dominate at the box office. It's set in the same world as Harry Potter, and was written by J.K. Rowling. It's the first of a planned three films, and already has the Potter fan community abuzz.

The Edge of Seventeen

Starring Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 2, Begin Again) and Blake Jenner (Glee), the film follows Nadine navigating high school life. Her world is flipped upside-down when her best friend starts dating her older brother.

November 25

Moana

Disney has been absolutely crushing it lately, especially in their animation department (Frozen, Zootopia, Big Hero 6). This film follows Moana, a navigational expert, as she sets her sails to a fabled island with demi-god Maui.

Lion

"A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia; 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family." This movie is getting a significant amount of awards buzz, and looks to be a remarkable story that combines age-old "find my family" themes with new technology in a modern world.

December 2

La La Land

A romantic musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, La La Land is the story of a jazz pianist who falls in love with an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. The film premiered at TIFF last week, and received massive acclaim. Emma Stone is getting considerable awards attention, and it's one of my most anticipated movies for the rest of the year.

Kidnap

Speaking of awards, this movie likely won't get Halle Berry any (maybe a Razzie), but Kidnap looks like the perfect 2pm, rainy day, "what's on cable?" film.

December 9

Miss Sloane

This movie is sure to be a swarm of controversy, especially because it deals with the hot-button issue of gun control. However, I'm happy to see Jessica Chastain front-and-center in this film. I would look out for this one come award season, and watch your Facebook pages because the backlash will happen.

Jackie

The film follows Jaqueline Kennedy in the days following her husband's assassination, and is grounded by Natalie Portman's performance, which some have called her greatest ever. There's not an official trailer yet, but the link above shows a clip that is wonderful.

December 16

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Yes, yes. This is all very exciting. I'm very excited. We don't know a lot about the story, but the trailers have been masterpieces, and Darth Vader is in it. It will be interesting to see what LucasFilm does when they're out of the saga sandbox.

December 21

Assassin's Creed

Could this be the first good video game movie? Or will it be another Warcraft? The talent is great (Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons), but will the story resonate with the vast audience? We shall see.

Passengers

So little is known about this film, other than it's set in a dystopian future and stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. But I really think that's all you need.

Sing

From the studio behind Despicable Me and (ugh) Minionscomes Sing, a movie about an animal singing competition. This studio has managed to turn out hit after hit, and I would expect this movie to be no different. And the trailers are pretty charming.

December 23

A Monster Calls

This trailer moved me in ways a trailer hasn't in a long time. It's based on a best selling book, and follows a boy who seeks the friendship of a tree monster to help him cope with his mother's terminal illness.

December 25

Why Him?

This movie has the potential to be really good or really bad. It has James Franco and Bryan Cranston, who are great actors, but sometimes comedies like these can fail hard. I also think the release date is strange. I don't know who is going to take their family to see an R-rated comedy on Christmas.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
