I recently finished up my first summer internship in NYC. I learned a lot--not only about the field I was working in, but about myself as well. It was definitely a growing experience for me, especially considering this was the summer after my freshman year. Not going to lie, I was super nervous on my first day. But my nerves quickly subsided as time went on and I began to take advantage of the opportunity that was given to me. With all of this said, here is a list of what I learned at my internship this summer:

1. You're going to be a little nervous--and that’s okay

Like I said, I was SUPER nervous for my interview and for my first day as well. But I got through it...and you will too. It's all part of the experience.

2. You might have some awkward encounters with people--and that’s okay too

In your first internship, you might not know what your place is in the office. What are you supposed to wear on your first day? Are you supposed to bring your laptop? Are you included in that meeting no one told you about? If you decide yes, is it your place to speak up in that meeting?

3. You’re going to learn a lot about your likes and dislikes

Somethings that you learn/ hear about sound fun, but when you are actually asked to do them...it's not so fun anymore. And vice versa. Sometimes you don't think you would like something until you actually do it. From my internship, I learned that there is truth to the phrase, Don't knock it until you try it.

4. And the things you learn will help you figure out exactly what it is that you want to do when you graduate

I'm a firm believer that you need a little bit of hands-on experience before you decide for sure what you want your career to be.

5. Depending on where you’re working, there may not always be something to do

But you can use that time to take initiative. Instead of just sitting there and waiting for an assignment, ask first if there is anything you can help with. It will look a lot better on your part.

6. And for my last and perhaps most important piece of advice….

If your boss gives you the company credit card...guard that thing….with your life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
