The Downs And Ups Of Being A Tall Woman

Ahh, the joys of being tall...

Over the years, I’ve definitely come to terms with my height, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some struggles that come with being tall. For a girl that is 5’10", I’ve experienced all the little everyday quirks that come with being above average in height. For those who are affected by tallness, this is for you.

1. No, I do not play basketball! My height has absolutely nothing to do with my athletic ability. I am probably one of the most uncoordinated people you will ever meet. Challenge me to a game of one-on-one and I’ll probably look like a giraffe running around on the court. But it’ll still be fun and entertaining, I promise!

2. Don’t even get me started with finding pants. If they’re long enough, they’re usually too big in the waist. If you want them to fit right you better be prepared to be wearing high waters.

3. And while we’re at it, dresses can be a tough buy too. They often seem to look short on you even though they’re a pretty normal length.

4. Heels are usually a no-go. This means finding shoes for dances or formals is difficult. Not wearing them is fine by me because blisters ensue and I just feel awkward towering over people. BUT that doesn’t mean tall girls and heels are a forbidden love! Why not love cute shoes? Work those long legs, girl!

5. The “nicknames” are just annoying. Sure, we probably laugh it off, but being called giant? Really? Do you think that makes me feel good?

6. Trying to cross your legs under a desk or sit in the movie theater or car is the worst. I formally apologize to every chair that I’ve kicked because I’m trying to stretch out my legs.

7. Until you’re in late high school, you’re taller than most of the boys you know. Finding a guy can be really difficult if that’s all you focus on, though! I’m lucky enough to have a boyfriend who is my height, but I would love him regardless. So girls, don’t avoid real feelings just because you’re taller than him.

8. You usually go to the back of the classroom because you’re self-conscious of people having to look over your head. This is actually something of a perk because you get to observe so much from the back! But that’s beside the point, moving on…

9. Friends use you as a shield from the sun or the rain. Don’t deny it guys, I am your personal umbrella.

10. People constantly remark on your height. “Why are you so tall?” Umm…genetics, I think? I don't know how to answer that. “Wow, you’re tall.” Yes, I realize.

With all these everyday hassles come some perks of being a little taller than most girls!

1. You can always see well in crowds! This comes in handy at concerts or when I lose my mom in the store (which happens often).

2. You tend to walk faster than others. This might not be my short friends’ favorite thing, but I think it's convenient!

3. Piggyback ride pictures are your go-to pose! You have mastered the adorable best friend photo because squatting to match their height just doesn’t work all the time! However, it can never be reciprocated because if your friends try to give you a piggyback ride, your feet will barely leave the ground.

4. When you finally do find the perfect length pants, it’s like Christmas every time you wear them!

5. You never had to wait to be tall enough for rides as a kid! There’s not much else to say about this other than it was awesome!

To all my tall girls out there, I know you probably have hated your height at one point or another, but don’t let it get you down! Stand tall, move past the problems your height causes, and be proud!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
