So, Rutgers lost. Brutally, but by no surprise. No star player, half of the defense and no coach on the field could have a little something do to with it. But this isn't what angered students who attended the game at Penn State this weekend. It was how we were treated, to our surprise, after Onward State claimed we were the ones who couldn't behave. Therefore, like any journalist would, I directly contacted Onward State on September 20th with this submission, entitled "Dear Onward State, Let's All Learn How to Behave".
"Nittany Lions -
We were pumped about the game; let's be real. You're the epitome of a Big 10 school and we want the rivalry really badly. It's true. You're upset about the fact that some students chanted "f--- Penn State" at a lot of our home games. That was wrong, I agree. We were only heated because we lost to you in the fourth quarter of our FIRST Big 10 game in history.
But let me tell your university about the experience that I had this weekend, at a supposed "non-rival" school of all places.
I was greeted with plenty of statements like "Oh, you go to Rutgers? That must suck," and an infinite amount of people screamed "f--- Rutgers" directly in my face. Exactly the same thing as you, Onward State, claimed we do in your article. But this isn't even what I'm upset about. I grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania. So, everyone I know goes to Penn State. Alumni, students and parents. Let's just say I am disgusted in what my home state said and did to my school and my fans.
After being criticized for our "bad behavior" by you and ESPN, I was not only cat-called, screamed at directly in the face and forced out of tailgates, but countless groups of men heckled my roommate and I while we were alone. And then they proceeded to follow us down the street after the game. People even screamed "Ray Rice" at a group of us. The Big 10 gave you the decency of bowl game suspension with your scandal. The media stuck to talking about your football, and you still received respect. Where is this respect for your fellow conference team?
During the game, we were mocked at the stadium by fans (parents and students alike) and even your announcers played OUR home field music. You stuck Rutgers student section in the very top corner and NEVER showed our fans on television. When you played at our stadium, you had a full section to yourselves.
Where is the sportsmanship and where are the humble fans? I can vouch for all Rutgers students there when I say we did not feel welcomed. As the author of "21 Reasons Why Penn State is No Competition to Rutgers," I can officially say that your cat-calling culture and the sheer rudeness we experienced this weekend will be added to my list.
Unplanned, I left State College late last night, upset and needing to get out of this atmosphere.
Take care, and I hope you don't treat all schools this way if all they want to do is be a part of a good game. I'm sorry we upset you, but you took it way too far.
Sincerely,
Scarlet Knights"
*I later learned from PSU sources that there were girls escorted from tailgates by the authorities because it was too dangerous, and "f--- Rutgers" chants were in its own student section, coincidence? Probably not.*
I ended the article with a few side notes, including my email and my recognition that this submission would probably not be posted. I said that I would be delighted to collaborate with David Abruzzese, author of "Rutgers has Chanted F--- Penn State at Every Home Game for a Year," in an article about how to actually behave at football games.
But get this. I waited a week for courtesy purposes, and Onward State never responded.
Yes, there are two sides to every story. Not every Penn State student heckled or chanted "f--- Rutgers," and not every Rutgers student chanted the opposite.
In Abruzzese's article from Onward State, he states, "The Big Ten is like a club, and while its members might not like each other on gameday, there’s still a degree of respect that should be emanated by all conference members. We don’t like you when we play, but that doesn’t mean we lose respect for you."
So what is the proper etiquette and respect at tailgates or football games if no one can display it? Does the Big 10 really know? Because it seems that no competition goes without harassment, heckling and sheer embarrassment for the university hosting the game.
No school should claim that it is better than another, especially when it can't defend its own actions. We're all equals.
Let's make that evident. And while we're at it, let's all learn how to behave.
