After spending countless hours with the friends I've made through my college extracurricular activities, rugby and sorority, I have come to know how much a blessing it is that I am a part of these organizations. I wonder what I would have done, or who I would have been without them. I of course love the friends I have made throughout my lifetime and I still cherish every moment with them. That will never change. But having friends I can see walking around campus and experience all that my organizations have to offer is a feeling like no other. For those incoming college freshmen, or currently un-involved students, being a part of a club or organization is something I would highly encourage you to do. Here are some of the many reasons to do so:
1. The Bond You Form
You end up spending a lot of time with the people in your groups that you form an inseparable bond with them. You find yourself always wanting to be doing something with them, whether it’s chilling in your school’s lounge or getting a bite to eat, you will want to make sure you are doing those things with them. Without them, you feel a sense of emptiness. Not that you can’t do those things alone, but because you don’t want to do it alone.
2. Familiar Faces Everywhere
Not a day goes by that I don’t see a familiar face walking around campus. I usually end up seeing like five a day. And every time that I do see them, I feel so excited and happy. They are always the highlight of my day. It is also great when you share classes with them. You know you can have someone to rely on if you miss class and need the notes. Or when it’s time to pick teams for your group projects you know that they are a great option.
3. Networking
You will hear this word a lot during college. It’s an important skill to have and by being involved on campus you improve upon this skill tremendously. I have gotten to know other students involved on campus and each time I do, I gain something of value from them. I know that when the time comes for me to find a job, I will have established a great network of people to support me and even help me with a job.
4. Resume Builders
Being involved gives you something else to put on your resume. Even more so if you end up taking on a leadership role in your organization. Not only were you able to handle a full-time student load and a part-time job, but you were able to also keep up with the requirements you might have for your organization. This shows potential employers that you are well-rounded and balanced.
5. Valuable Skills
Being so involved has taught me a lot of great skills. I have learned how to manage my time better. I need to be able to stay on top of my school work all while making sure to attend events or practices. I have also improved upon my leadership skills. I have been blessed with the opportunities to be a leader in my organization and by doing so I have gotten better at it.
6. Countless Memories
I know that someday I will look back and be able to remember all the wonderful times I’ve had. Late nights and early mornings. Laughing until it hurt. Celebrations of great achievements. You name it, I’ve most likely experienced. My heart and soul have been filled with moments that will last a lifetime.
7. Someone Is Always There
Having gained so many friends I know that no matter what I will have someone to count on. That if a situation gets rough, they will be there for me when I need it most. Having that support system is wonderful and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
These are just some of the few reasons why being involved on campus is such a wonderful thing to have. There are so many great opportunities to gain from campus involvement. I encourage everyone to be involved with a least one thing. I promise you, you won’t regret that decision. I know I don’t.
