Whether you're going for the peanuts, home runs, or just some good family bonding time, baseball is always an enjoyable time; that's until a fan or your loved one is struck unexpectedly.
On Friday, August 21, a female fan was struck by a foul ball during the eighth inning of the Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers baseball game. The game was stopped for about seven minutes while the fan was treated by Comercia Park first aid and then transported to a local Detroit hospital. However, this isn't the first time this type of incident has occurred. In July another woman, who was a victim of a broken bat, was attending the Oakland A's vs. Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park and was unfortunately struck in the face and required 40 stitches.
Major-league baseball players are urging action to improve safety now that another fan was hurt during a game. Baseball players and executives feel situations like these need to be handled before it's too late. Tigers starter Justin Verlander says, "It's just something that needs to be looked at, and hopefully it doesn't get to the point where something really serious happens before there's an adjustment made."
Verlander also took to Twitter saying that "more protective measures need to be put in place in all ballparks! Players are sick of seeing injuries that could easily be avoided!" according to ESPN.com. Major League Baseball has been called on to extend the protective netting that is placed behind home plate. According to ESPN.com, the commissioner's office has begun to discuss safety with all the clubs and "it's something right now that is being looked at seriously."
