Why We Should End The Stigma Surrounding Mental Illness

I just wanted it to stop. I was tired of being afraid. I was tired of being anxious. I was tired of feeling like this all the time.

Four-hundred-fifty million people worldwide currently suffer from a mental illness, and I happen to be one of those people. Along with enduring the pain of this illness is a stigma. We are disgraced for being sick. Disgraced for living with an illness we have no control over. Society needs to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and educate themselves to better help the individuals who suffer.

If we end the stigma, people will be less scared to speak up and talk about their illnesses. Once they are comfortable sharing their story, they can get help for something out of their control. Help is the first step toward recovery. There is a life beyond mental illness, and everyone is much more than their imperfections.

Without the stigma, help becomes more plausible. It isn’t easy to admit you have an illness or to ask somebody for help. It’s also not easy to go to therapy or to rely on medication to feel like yourself. When I went to therapy it was awkward and uncomfortable at first, but it made such an impact on my life and helped me very much.

It was huge when I was able to openly talk about my issues without fear of judgment. To receive help from someone may be difficult, but you can’t fight the battle of a mental illness alone, and a person is more likely to ask for help from someone they trust without fear of judgment.

Without judgment, the stigma is shattered, and education begins. Education is the key to everything. People need to break the social norm of judgment and learn something new. The more society learns about mental illnesses, the better they can treat people who struggle with them every day. Fewer people would suffer if everyone would take the time and try to learn more, without fear or judgment.

When we destigmatize mental illness, space is made for awareness and education to occur. Awareness is an important task, and mental illness should not be a taboo topic anymore. We have to become comfortable enough to talk about mental health.

Treatment is available in the form of therapy or medicine, and it’s a good decision to get help. It’s a hard decision to make, but it's worth it. People shouldn’t have to be scared to get help for their mental illness. They should feel encouraged.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
