Everyone feels beaten down at times, and experiences situations in which they question their own self worth. In today’s society, an individual can face this adversity from a multitude of sources. Some of these sources include, family/friends, co-workers, the media, or classmates. It is important in life to learn how to become self-reliant when it comes to knowing your strengths, and the role you play in society, without the aid of other’s reinforcement.
It is too often that people feel pressure from, or negated by their loved ones. It is not always intentional, but it can affect them negatively nonetheless. When one feels misunderstood or useless to those they care about or respect, it can often be hard to rebound from such a feeling of insignificance. It may feel as if there are few ways to regain assurance in oneself. This all can be made easier, if you learn to rely on yourself for confidence.
The media is easily the largest source of demeaning and outrageous standards. Whether it be the idea of looking a particular way, having a prestigious career, making a ton of money, or defining what is ‘trendy’, the media plays a huge role in the standards and expectations of society. With constant stressors and concerns riddling the self-esteem of today’s individuals, it is important to remember what makes you proud of yourself, and what your purpose is.
How many times have your efforts, views, beliefs, image, hobbies, etc., been shut down or deemed unnecessary by others? Who has the right to declare what is best for you other than yourself?
It is most certainly not easy or natural to be self-confident and have the ability to accept and define your own self worth; however, it is something worth working toward. Here are a few tips to help become more confident, and determine your unique worth and purpose in this world.
- Try not to overthink other’s comments toward you or your lifestyle
- Know your strengths, and do not be afraid to flaunt them
- Also know your weaknesses, and learn to grow in those areas
- Be able to name five things you love about yourself as a reminder for when you face a blow to your self-esteem
- Invest time in yourself and the things that you enjoy
- Remember that no one is perfect, so those who judge you have also have flaws
- You are the only one who can live with your decisions, so do not be afraid to do what’s best for yourself
- Surround yourself with those who make you a better person, and remind you of your worth
