Dear Current Softball Player,
It has been a couple of years since I last played. Each time spring hits, I miss playing so much more, and sometimes it isn't easy to accept that your softball career is over. I played travel softball in high school and had wanted to play in college. However, I chose to go to a D1 school and was unable to play. I never thought in high school that in my 20s I wouldn't be playing softball. Softball is in my blood, and if I could I would still be playing. I would jump at any chance to have the opportunity to get to coach, especially if I was a hitting coach. It is OK to cry at your last game, I did. It was mainly because I knew that there was a good chance I wouldn't be playing in college. Just remember that you may not be playing softball in a few years and here are a few things to remember:
1. Never take any game for granted
Your softball career could end at any moment from a possible injury.
2. Always appreciate your coach
There are times where you don't like your coach, and I get that, but you need to appreciate your coach for all he/she does. They are taking time out of their schedule to be a coach to help people learn and play the game that they love. My high school coach will always be "coach" to me!
3. Thank your parents/someone who goes to your games and helps you become a better player
Your parents/grandparents/etc. has taken you to games and practices since you were little. They were always there to help you when you needed it, there to get you that ball, bat and glove. They were the ones who when you wanted to be a pitcher would make sure that you were practicing. They would pass the ball with you if you wanted to when there was free time. Thank them for all of the time that they have taken to help you out and who was always there. Sometimes they don't know how much they mean to you.
4. Be a good teammate
Being a good teammate is crucial for the team. The team must get along and flow like a well-oiled machine. Don't be that person who drags the team down. People who drag the team down don't help the team especially if it is a close game.
5. Play with your heart
Play with your heart. This may seem like a simple thing, but softball is just like any other sport. You have to play with your heart, otherwise, it won't be enjoyable. Playing with your heart doesn't mean that you have to be the best on the team, but to play your hardest and try their best.
Enjoy playing,
A former softball player
